This is a great way to start out FMQ / meandering. Thank you for posting, very clever !

MacThayer 06-23-2012 11:22 AM

Oh, I just tried this, and it makes meandering SO much easier. Thank you, thank you for posting this tutorial! Your insight/instinct is right on!

nanascottie 06-30-2012 03:39 AM

awesome - i can't seem to get free motion quilting right. that is a good idea to draw the line so you don't get lost
and stuck . i gave up after one try but now i am going to use this method. thanks.

rrhaigh 07-02-2012 05:22 AM

What a great idea. My brain won't do stippling either, so I will give this a try! I have a long arm and all I can do are pantographs because I am so afraid to fmq and get stuck or make a mistake on the quilt.

carolaug 07-02-2012 03:35 PM

I am the same we must use the other side of the brain. I love to stipple and meandering...

This is so great! It is one of those, "Why didn't I think of that moment!" Thank you so much! This will help me greatly. I am literally afraid of stippling. With your help, I believe that I will now be able to do it and not get messed up within minutes. Yolanda

rozeebythesea 07-08-2012 12:47 AM

Thank you this makes more sense. Now can you help me with feathers?

Mary O 07-08-2012 01:47 AM

Thank-you so much,I was struggling with that straight line row too. Will try this today.

GwenH 07-08-2012 07:47 PM

I'm the exact opposite, I can do free motion stippling really well, bit it's the others that I have trouble with... I know I need to practice!

G'ma Kay 07-09-2012 04:41 AM

Thank you for sharing your genius!

btiny36 07-09-2012 06:02 AM

Wow thanks...this will help with quilting on my longarm...I've tried some free hand, but ripped it out, got out a pantograph...going to try this on the current 60th birthday quilt i'm working on....

Sew Freak 07-09-2012 02:12 PM

AWESOME!! This method seems very dooable. I always had a hard time doing stipping and gave up on it....I'm going to try this...it does make sense!! Thanks for sharing!!

redbugsullivan 07-10-2012 07:45 PM

Yes, I am one of those folks that does NOT want to break the rules and cross the line. Your method seems to allow for this and permit me to meander into those spaces where I would NOT have ventured before. Thank you for sharing your "out of the box" method.

rlane28 07-11-2012 12:37 PM

Thank you for the visual! :-)

tripztravl 07-20-2012 03:54 AM

Thanks so much - this is soooo helpful! Needed it too - ready to quilt a baby quilt! Thanks again!

NanaCsews2 08-27-2012 07:14 AM

I like your idea better. It makes so much sense! I too do not like the 'row' method. I am going to try out your meandering ways to see if this is what I need to use when teaching my nieces stippling. Thanks for sharing. Don't you love those 'light bulb moments'?

I just checked out your scrappy quilt. I really like the simplicity of it. I like the wide open spaces of the stippling vs. the tight designs. I think the quilts remain softer because of it.

Thank you very mucho for those great Tutorial!
A hug!

rainsprite 09-07-2012 01:57 PM

I am not as afraid to try thanks to your technique - Thank you/Mudsprite/Rainsprite

blueheavenfla 09-07-2012 09:37 PM

I can hardly wait to try your idea. It makes so much sense to me and perhaps my meandering will be less jerky. I find making smooth turns difficult and end up with lots of sharp points. Thank you.

kiffie2413 09-09-2012 10:36 AM

Thanks so much, as I had the same problems as you mentioned...this definitely helps my brain, too...with your great idea, and Leah's knowledge, maybe I can change some of my ufos to earthlings...lol..

I agree, I can stipple no problem, but feathers are not so easy for me. You got any tips on mastering feathers? By the way, your quilt turned out great!

BETTY62 09-10-2012 08:55 PM

Thank you for the tip. I have been wanting to try this but just couldn't grasp how to start.

sewgarden 09-10-2012 09:22 PM

Wow that looks like a great idea.

Lisa49 10-14-2012 04:29 AM

OMG!! I have wanted to meander forever but have been so afraid to try. I also watch Leah and have saved her videos but not done it. I will definitely be doing this today and practicing. I have several Christmas table runners to quilt so this is perfect. Thank you, thank you.

stjohnmbc 10-16-2012 08:14 AM

Great idea. Since I've been practicing on paper it has helped train the brain while practicing on my mini sandwiches so your idea I just tried and it reinforced the fact that I am very comfortable with the stippling. I felt like a pro when I snaked out your idea. Now I need to prove it on the real thing, my quilt top. Thanks for the idea.

DottyD 10-20-2012 05:22 AM

Brilliant tip - thanks so much !

Wintersewer 01-20-2013 06:00 PM

WONDERFUL idea!!!! THANK YOU!

SaberzMom 01-21-2013 06:58 PM

I echo Pinkiris! BRILLIANT!!! I follow Leah Day and am presently taking her Free Motion Quilting a Sampler from Craftsy. I have bought one of her books (365 FMQ Designs) and one of her DVDs From Daisy to Paisley. She is an excellent teacher, however you have helped me wrap my brain around stippling/meandering so now maybe I won't get stuck in a corner! Thanks! Linda

What a great idea

grandma chicken 01-22-2013 03:46 AM

What a great idea! You wouldn't have a tutorial on feathers too, would you? I am beginning to think I'm feather challenged!

quiltyjax 01-23-2013 05:42 AM

To conquer FMQ and actually finish something I gave myself permission to cross lines if it became necessary so now I loop the loop all over my quilts. I shall definitely try your brilliant method on my next quilt - I need to extend my repertoire. I'm also feather challenged even on paper!

paz6204 02-11-2013 05:01 PM

I can not thank you enough for showing how you figured this out!!! I drew it on paper then used a disappearing ink marker to put it on a baby quilt, wow! That's all I can say!! I only did an 18x18 piece and then free handed from there! I am addicted! I have whipped thru 4 quilts that were stacking up with me dreading how I was going to top stitch them! Thank you , thank you, THANK YOU!!!!!!

JuneD 02-13-2013 08:05 AM

I'm going to try this method of meandering (don't you just love that word?? :-))). Makes a lot more sense to me now.

vjohnson 02-14-2013 09:29 AM

Awesome, brilliant. Thank you for sharing. I'm a little left-brained (sometimes no-brained) myself. I'm so excited, I have been procrastinating on a project for the very reason you mentioned. Storm forward, I say, and don't look back.

This is one of those "slap my forehead and wonder why I didn't think of this" moments! Brilliant! I'm going to give this a try and I just happen to currently be working on a very large quilt that is getting an all over meander. Thanks so much!! :) :)

Lilrain 02-16-2013 10:25 PM

looks like you came up with a winner! Thanks

Grinster 02-17-2013 03:51 PM
