I have been loking for this one! Thank you so much!

I have zippered headers but sewed the zippers about 3" from the edges. I cut off a 3" strip from my headers before I installed them. Finished the edges of the cuts, sewed the sleeping bag size zippers in then installed the headers on the rollers. One for the bottom edge of the top, one on each end of the backing.
I use one pin for each, placing that pin at a measured distance from the corner of the quilt piece to be basted so the edges line up when rolled up. Always sew from the same side of your quilt. I do sew with my old Pfaff piecing machine which has the built-in walking foot. Just lengthen the stitch for basting. Quick as a wink!
I just do not pin baste anymore.

thank you very good tut with excellent pics!

Great tutorial. Very clear and easy to follow. Too bad I didn't know about this method when I made my first quilt 25 years ago. I made a full size log-cabin using this quilt process found in a magazine, but the joining was not very professional. The quilt is still in use though. I think I will try it again with your process.

Can I please say a HUGE thank you. I am a very new sewer/quilter. The very first /okay and second quilt I've made are quilt as you go crazy quilts. I for the life of me could not figure out the directions for the sashing in the back they made no sense to me. For 3 months both quilts have sat in the corner of my room with me being frustrated. I had to move on to a rag quilt for my husband.

But now, thanks to you,... I can finish these quilts. With no kidding and no exaggeration... you have saved me from feeling like a failure because I couldn't understand the process.

Julianna 03-21-2011 05:55 AM

Excellent!

If you can find an inch wide ready made cotton binding, you could use that instead of making your own - makes it even simpler! :D

Great tute! Thanks for sharing your talent.I do have one question....I'm sure it's just me, missing what's in front of my face! Where you press the joining strips to the back, then stitch in the ditch....I'm not sure where the ditch is? What am I missing? Thanks so much.

You stitch from the front either side of the sashing strips - the black strips on this example. Because the joining strips on the back are slightly wider, this means you'll stitch them in place at the same time. :-D

plainpat 03-22-2011 10:50 AM

Knew it was my own thick head missing whatever. Thanks....have saved your tute.

beaytiful! Thank you

Like so many others here your tute has given me new hope for some of my projects - Love your heart but I was just thinking -- maybe continuing the diagionals to make the heart meet in the middle with one center line instead of having the vertical blocks - anxious to give it a try :)

That is the fun of this I think - you can get all sorts of different effects just by working with colour values and/or the orientation of the strips. :-D

Thanks for one of the best tutorials that I've seen, this was very well done, and thank you for sharing your techniques with us.

Yes that's a good way. There is also a Clover bias tape maker that is an inch wide, or you could buy ready made tape or cotton ribbon if you wanted to. :-D

Julie, you did great. I especially like how you even did the matching direction of plaid on the back! Great job. I should use this method more often, too!

Love that lego quilt - you did a great job and I am so glad it worked out for you. :-D

How did you piece the very top of the heart, and the very bottom? Those 2 squares are a mystery to me. Top row, piece #3, and bottom row, piece #3. Thanks

Top row, I pieced the beige and red Quarter Square triangle sections first, then sewed the long centre red strip over the raw edges and so on outwards to the corner. In the bottom row piece 3 I pieced the red section first, leaving the ends slightly longer then covered them with the longest beige pieces on the diagonal and worked my way out to the corners. Hope that's clear. :-D
