I did these as a make and take years ago at the fair using hand crank sewing machines. We all had so much fun and then I heard later how many of them went on to sew other things. A great beginner activity.

Try doing one in a circle using a cd as a pattern.

I have made these using Christmas fabric. Great for a small "happy" for neighbors, etc. Also, they fit nicely on the bottom of a wine glass. You can actually fit the wine glass (stemware) bottom by starting at one side and swirling it until it is covered. Then is becomes a wine glass charm! Will attempt to add picture.

I have made dozens of these and they really work well too. I have never done the top stitching and they have still held up really well so that would just be a personal preference.

Thanks for the tutorial. I've made dozens and dozens of these. I love the fact that you don't have to either mess with binding or hand stitch an opening left for turning. I often make them from quilt scraps to coordinate the décor ... bedroom or living rooms.

I've even made them on a much larger scale and use them as "appliance sliders". I do use the top stitching for the larger ones.

Thanks everyone for adding on to my post. I will try out the circle ones using a CD as a pattern and for sure I know some friends who use stemmed glasses. They will be getting some coasters for Christmas for they and their guests. So great to get all the ideas everyone shares.
