7" squares, says Betty's chart on your page!

Check out Betty's chart on this blog

Is that a pic of a Dear Jane quilt? wow! I have only 18 blocks, took me a yr, while doing other projects!

Never starch after cutting, seems that fabric tends to get out of size if I do.

The chart which was displayed earlier in the thread says a 7" block will = 4 4 1/2" hst, but I think I would cut in a half-inch bigger. You can always trim if it's too big.

Have you done this? I never thought of doing it that way.

I used the method of making quick half sq. triangles and this is the quilt top I just finished. It was a lot of work because of the bias edges, but it went together very well, though I really had to take my time sewing and had to starch, starch and more starch.

I am going to cut on the diagonal next time, but it does use more fabric to do it that way. I did a couple of hst using the sq. ruler on the diagonal and the results are great. I just have not figured out yet how much more fabric I will need to do it that way.

Gorgeous quilt!

That is the technique that I have been looking for. I'm anxious to try this for a project I want to do. Thanks also for the measurements for the blocks and the resulting triangles.

When you cut these on the diagonal you will have two left over strips. Sew them together on the straight side and you can cut some more hst's

I'm not sure I understand the left over strips. I was experimenting tonight and sewed around an 8" block. When I cut the square on the diagonal, I had four hst that trimmed down to 5". This went very quickly and was accurate.
