One can cut 9 1/2 inch bias strips (or what ever size beginning square you want) and cut squares from those. That gives the beginning squares on bias. When done sewing together and cutting, outside edges will be on straight grain.

Just be careful they don't stretch since all your outside edges are on the bias.
