Can't wait to see the finished jacket!

BJ SewKkrazzy 02-25-2011 04:15 PM

Beautiful job!

quilter in the making 02-25-2011 04:17 PM

Can't wait to try one with your tutorial. Thanks for posting this.

Ceil 02-25-2011 04:33 PM

This is just lovely!

sosewcrazy 02-25-2011 04:48 PM

Thanks so much for this!

ging10ging 02-25-2011 05:41 PM

I love this idea so pretty. I've been going to make a couple for a couple of years and haven't seen one I've been crazy about until now. I have been waiting to find a coffee colored sweatshirt can't find. They used to have so many pretty colors I thought it was just here in Fl. they don't have a good selection. I hope we can get the pattern or some info you did a great job. Sue

hilda Vest 02-25-2011 06:24 PM

Thanks for this info. I have a sweatshirt but have been reluctant to try the jacket. You've demystified it for me.
Thanks!! I'll get busy.

remareis 02-25-2011 06:40 PM

Thanks, I have seen them and would like to try to make one

huntannette 02-25-2011 07:02 PM

Want to see the rest of your tut...please!!!!

Alondra 02-25-2011 07:04 PM

Thank you very much for taking the time and effort to put up this tute. I have always wanted to make a sweatshirt jacket, but didn't know how. Your directions are very clear. Will be watching the site, in case you add new information. Thanks, again!

biscuitqueen 02-25-2011 07:20 PM

thanks for sharing

Diamondrose 02-25-2011 07:21 PM

tlrnhi,

Great job on this tutorial, your jacket is going to be absolutely beautiful. I had a sweatshirt ready to make a jacket and after seeing this earlier I have the strips all cut ready to start putting them together like you have done.

Thank you for all your hard work making this tutorial.

Annz 02-25-2011 07:28 PM

Looks very colorful.

tlrnhi 02-25-2011 07:38 PM

Ok, here's the sleeves and the back....

Ok, here's your sleeve.
Lay it out, making sure you have it flat. It's going to go together pretty much like the front.

Take your sleeve and fold it in half. Give it an iron so you have a crease and you have your middle.

Now, lay a strip down the crease so that half is on the sleeve and half is not. Give it a pin here and there to hold it on.

Unfold it and lay it flat again.
Lay your next strip next to the one you just pinned. Either side is fine, doesn't matter.

Sew it down just like you did when you were doing the front piece.
Now, continue on until you are almost done
See the little edge that shows? Well, don't worry about wasting a strip for it, just use your little pieces that you had leftover from cutting or that you took off of the longer strips.

Now, turn it over like you did the front piece and trim it all around.

Now you have a sleeve done! Repeat with the other sleeve!

Now for the back......

Lay your back out, fold it in half like you did the sleeve, crease it and do pretty much the same thing you did for the sleeve.

Sew the same, either side first, just like the sleeve.

See the edges showing? Just like the front and sleeve...use the leftover pieces to cover.

Now, it's done.
Just turn it over, just like the sleeve and front, trim it up and your back is now done!!

If you want to put a label on it, I suggest you do that BEFORE you start sewing strips.

Lee Monahan 02-25-2011 07:41 PM

Thank you sooooo much, can't wait for the next part with sleeves and putting it all together.

BETTY62 02-25-2011 07:46 PM

Thank you for the tute. I love your fabric.

tlrnhi 02-25-2011 07:51 PM

Ok, I have the MidAtlantic Quilt show tomorrow. Once I get back from spending all my money, I'll finish up with the putting together. It's actually pretty easy to do.
Like I said on other threads...If I can do it, so can you!!

juneayerza 02-25-2011 08:05 PM

Thank you for taking your time to do this.

roseOfsharon 02-25-2011 08:07 PM

Thanks for this tutorial. I have bookmarked it to come back to to see the next steps! And later to make one for ME!! :) One question... when you are sewing the strips, are they face down on top of each other and stitched at 1/4" and then turned back toward the sweatshirt front etc. or are the edges just sewn side by side with raw edges exposed? I hope this makes sense!

betlinsmom 02-25-2011 08:40 PM

Wonderful!! I look forward to making one!! Thanks!!!

tlrnhi 02-25-2011 08:54 PM

Yes, lay the strips right sides together, sew 1/4 inch, then flip and iron.

Thank you Terri!

Boslie 02-25-2011 09:01 PM

Thank you! I like your colors. Finally a way to not have the bulk on the shoulders. Can't wait for the rest. Very Nice. This one is a keeper.

judylg 02-26-2011 04:10 AM

Look forward to sewing it back together. Now I wonder what colors to do it. What is everyone else thinking? I like to do something like this, but I want it to look good when I am done. Will have to start digging through my 'saved' fabric.

Kat29803 02-26-2011 04:24 AM

Thank you for all your time and energy.

Limey 02-26-2011 04:46 AM

Yes, thank you for sharing this with us. Your directions are great! Sure do appreciate it.

Tawnya's Mom 02-26-2011 09:19 AM

I am excited. I have wanted to make one, but needed to see how it's done.

terry leffler 02-26-2011 11:59 AM

Love it-thank you!

theresa.redington 02-26-2011 03:10 PM

Thanks for the tutorial. It looks doable.

Dona Heater 02-27-2011 04:50 AM

I have made me one for the fall.

That is great. What colors did you choose? Speaking for myself, have so much fabric, I think I would not have to buy much, except the sweathshirt. I am thinking of a two color one, but not sure. Hey even if I do not get to this, I have had something to think about.

Laura F 02-27-2011 06:44 AM

I saw sweatshirts for $2.50 at Wal-mart just yesterday. They were not very thick, but after putting fabric on them, I think they would work.

Shemjo 02-27-2011 07:49 AM

Great job, Terri! The jacket looks great, and the instructions are clear. I sewed mine on the fuzzy side so the jacket would be easier to put on and take off and not pill on me. Thanks again for sharing this.

DawnMarie 02-27-2011 11:12 AM

Have you all ever lined a sweatshirt jacket?

scrapykate 02-27-2011 12:08 PM

oh, this looks like such fun and with spring coming, think I'm going to have hit my scrap bin!!!

tlrnhi 02-27-2011 06:48 PM

Ok, now we have all pieces covered, right?

Now, let's sew it all back together!!

First, take your back piece, lay it flat, fabric side up.
Take your front piece(s) lay it fabric side down, so it's right sides together. Pin at shoulder seams.

Sew 1/4 inch seam. Once that is done, go back and sew a zigzag over the seam to strenghten it.

Do this to both sides. Once both seams are done, iron seams towards back.

Now, on to the sleeves. Take your time with the sleeves. It's a bit tricky, but you can do it.
Find the center of the top of the sleeve. Put a pin in it.

Now, with right sides together, match shoulder seam and the pin up. Then pin, pin, pin all the way around from one side to the other. YOU ARE NOT GOING TO CLOSE THIS SEAM. The seam will stay open and the arm length will be sewn later. Just take your time.
You are going to sew this just like the shoulder seams. 1/4 inch, then go over it with a zigzag stitch.

Now you have both sleeves done. Ready to finish it? This is the easy part.

Match the underarm seams, pin to hold. Now pin all the way down the side of the jacket and pin the seam for the sleeve.

Now, sew one continuous seam from the bottom of the jacket, up the side and along the sleeve. There you have it! Continue with the other side.
You are still sewing 1/4 inch with zigzag after it.

Now you are ALMOST done!
Turn the jacket right side out. Do you like what you see? Cool!! Give the side seam a bit of an iron, along with the seam for the sleeve.

Now, you can either bind it with store bought binding, or binding that you've made. You can round off the front bottom corner to make it a bit more finished if you want.
I'll be adding the binding to mine in the next day or so and will post pictures of that, but the jist of it is....bind the bottom of the sleeves. Then, start at the bottom back and using ONE continuous piece of binding, go all the way around the bottom of the jacket, up the front, around the neck, and back down again until you end where you started.

Any questions, just send me a PM

Awesome Job Terri :) Make me one please :)

tlrnhi 02-27-2011 07:09 PM

Machel, you already made one. Make one for yourself! OR..just come on down again, and you can use my machine. I even have some of the fabric that I made mine with that you can have to make yours.
