You're welcome everyone! Let me know how you are doing with the lesson. Any stumbles? Anything I could have done better? were the pictures enough or should I have added a couple more or so along the way? any feedback is welcome and you might help someone else if you post your experiences. Thanks everyone!!

Make sure you are not using any periods or slash marks in your project name. Try just a simple one word name and see if it will work for you.

nope that won't do it either, I have tried my name, new, my granddaughters name and there was another one that I can't remember, did work.

It is telling you you are trying to place the block without any color(drawing) and it won't let you do that. Check your block and make sure you have clicked the right arrow below the block in the palette so you see color in your block. It will work when you change that.

CarolH 11-07-2011 04:41 PM

its ok Rhonda i've finally found preferences and changed it

I thought I posted this earlier but apparently it didn't get posted.

When that happens I open an already existing project and then click on save as and title it New or whatever you want.

I called the EQ co and the guy I talked to said it is because EQ5 is 10 yrs old and it was made to be compatible with the old systems and the newer systems don't interface with it so well. So in his words you will find errors when trying to use it on a newer system. He said if you can find a way around it then that is what you should do. So the way I do it is the way around that error message.

Open your EQ5 click on open existing project.
Then after you open a project just go up to file and find save as and give it a new name and save it.
If that doesn't work then you will have to upgrade to 6 or 7.

Click on quilt in your tool bar at the top.
On that menu click on new quilt
and then slide over on the next menu and click on Horizontal

That should do it.

When you click on layout what happens? You should see a pop up window that has all the info for your quilt set up.

Thank you, Rhonda, for the tutorial. I've managed to get this far on my own and looking forward to the next 'classes'. You are explaining things well with your descriptions and pictures. You are a great instructor.

Thanks
Verna2197

look at the file tabs right under the blue Electric Quilt 5 bar...have you selected 'Create a New Project?' it is not an Existing Project, yet, so it would give you an error msg...and what exactly are you typing as your new filename?

Rhonda! what a great intro...love the size of your 'steps' and I appreciate so much the time you took...I didn't get a chance to look at your class till this evening...are you going to be leaving the first lessons on when you post a new one, so we can refer back or will it not let you do that?...if you can, please do...

I put new in the box, yes it is on Create a new project, I don't have any existing ones as I have never used this program. Is there anything else that I could possibly do please.

peppermint31 11-08-2011 05:38 AM

Yes the classes will remain on the board. There is a section in Topics List for anything pertaining to EQ so I am adding the lessons to that list so you can see them all in one place.

when you see your block in the sketchbook or the pop up window if it is not colored you need to click the right arrow that is at the bottom of that little window. this will choose the block you want to use. The block is saved as the original outline and then any added blocks that are colored are added on top of that. It usually saves something like 4 or 5 in one stack. Just keep clicking rt if you have saved more than one. then click on the one you want to add to your quilt.

Usually when it says not a Valid File Name, you have entered quote marks or an exclamation mark or something that the program can't recognize. Try backspacing or deleting the complete area where you type & just to make a change, why don't you try to call it verna instead of new and see what happens.

She has already tried that and it wasn't the problem. Mine won't let me add a new file of any kind either. It is just a compatibility problem between the old program and the new system. She tried using several differant titles and none of it worked. The system can not read the new title. So we are trying a differant "run around the endzone" but I don't know if it will work. I hope to hear from her that it worked. If it worked I will post the solution.

labug 11-08-2011 09:58 AM

Thanks Rhonda, Keep up good had trouble with getting the color in the block, but work on it and got it. Thanks can't wait for next lesson.
