Rhonda's Electric Quilt Class - Week 7 - Figuring Yardage

10 Attachment(s)
This week we will look at figuring yardage. Please read all the way through before you try to follow the directions. As far as I can tell all 3 versions are the same for this lesson. You will find the icons might be in the top tool bar in 6 and 7 instead of on the left. But otherwise they are the same.

Before you follow these steps make sure you click on layout under your quilt and make sure you have the size of your blocks right. If you are using sashing and or borders make sure you have them in the right numbers to get the best estimate on yardage.

Click on the printer icon. You will see a menu pop up.
Click on Fabric Yardage.

Now you should see this window.
Make sure you put in the width of your fabric.

In the lower left corner click on Preview
You don't want to print yet.

Next you will see this.

To be able to see it better
Click on Zoom In.
You will again see the magnifier glass icon

Go down to the fabrics
and click just above the left corner
Hold it down and draw a box over the fabrics.

This will enlarge the picture.

I would prefer to print it at this size
but I haven't been able to.
You can print it and then enlarge it.

You can get the yardage for the backing by making the quilt all one color. Then follow the steps again to get the yardage.

If you want binding figured you could add an extra border and make sure it is the right size. Color it a differant color so it will figure the yardage on just that border. I believe most bindings are 2 1/2" wide and then the length of the quilt sides. So I would add abit more on after you get the numbers.

-----------------------------------------------

Now let's look at the Block

Put a block on the worktable
When you click on the printer icon
you get this menu

Click on Block

You will see this window
You need to set the size of your block
and choose the type of block

Now for printing a foundation for paper piecing
Go back to the printer icon
Click on Foundation Pattern

Continued on next post

Make sure you set the size of your block
and all the options are the way you want them

Then you can click on preview and see the placement
of your foundation pattern.

Now go back and click on Numbering
You will get this pattern
there is a button on the right
that you can click on to change the numbers

Now go back to the printer icon

I'm showing this one is in EQ7
but you can do the same in EQ6 or EQ5

Click on Templates

You will get the block
laid out in templates

Now let's try out the rotary cutting
click on Rotary Cutting

You will get this diagram to show
you how you can cut out the pieces
with a rotary cutter.

Once you have copied or imported
the NY Beauty (in EQ6 and EQ7)into your sketchbook
you just need to choose the NY as
your block. This one is already in
the library that comes with your EQ.

In EQ5 the closest I could come to a NY Beauty
is in Contemporary Pieced and then
choose Sun Compasses

Here is the New York Beauty
to show you how it can show
the foundation pattern

And here are the pieces
shown as templates.

Hope this has been easy to follow. If you have any questions just let me know!

There may be another way, but I go to "archive" at the bottom of the page, then tutorials, All 7 classes are listed, although 5 is listed twice, but it is actually 6. There are 7 weeks including todays class.

No, you didn't miss any, just a typo, one lesson each week, week 5 and week 6. So you are right up there with us.

Sorry about that. I keep meaning to have Patrice fix that and keep forgetting to ask her.

All the lessons are in the Electric Quilt section in the Topics Lists

See Rhonda. I still haven't figured this board out...I go in the back door to get what I'm looking for.

Millstream Mom 12-19-2011 02:12 PM

For some reason both my printer at home & at work say "The document could not be printed" "There were no pages selected to print" - even when I have clicked print all pages or pages 1 to 11? I haven't had this happen before and was wondering if somethings wonky with my computer?

I'm assuming you mean printing off these pages. If so, click file, print preview and you can see what is on the page and then choose what pages you want to print. But go back to page one and do it, from this page you don't get much. Hope it works.

Are you trying to print the PDF file or these pages? I can send you the PDF file in an email if you like. Then you can download it to your computer and you can print or not as you like. As long as you have it on your computer you can see it from there.

Rhonda

When trying to print the pages from your tutorial it doesn't show anything for page 7 and for page 9 of week 7. Last week I also didn't get part of week 6. I am saving them in a folder on the computer and also trying to print them off to keep with my EQ 6 book, but it keeps saying there is an error. Hope someone can help so I can get all the pages.

Thank you for all that you are doing for us.

Gonna try posting this PDF again. I tried and I couldn't print the file from the first link either.

Ok I saved this copy of the PDF to my computer and I tried printing it and I got it to print just fine. No empty pages and it did ok.

See if you have any more problems and let me know if it went ok for you. If worst comes to worse I just printed off two copies of this file so I can mail one to anyone who can't get the file to work for you.

Suzy 12-20-2011 05:13 AM

Rhonda

Thank You. It all printed this time. Thanks so much for giving of your time to us. You make it much easier to understand with the step by step directions. again, thank you.

You're welcome everyone and I am glad this PDF link works right now. I am learning so much and finding things even in EQ5 that I didn't realize was there. So I am enjoying this journey right along with you all!! I never thought I needed EQ7 but I am so glad I bought it. I am having a blast exploring it.

If anyone is thinking of getting it I would highly recommend it. Especially if you love creating your own designs. It has so many wonderful features a lot of which I still haven't figured out.

My grandson designed some quilts using my EQ5 last year and he used a lot of New York Beauties in his designs. Now I am not a paper piecer. So I was at a loss as to how to make his designs into patterns. Now with this last lesson I discovered how to make a paper pieced pattern so I should be able to turn his designs into patterns that he can sell. Joey just turned 13 Dec 10th and he already has a real eye for design!

Each lesson has it's own PDF. Some of them probably most of them the PDF is added in after the lesson

Here is the Topics List section for the Electric Quilt threads
http://www.quiltingboard.com/tags/electric+quilt.html

You will find all the EQ threads there.

Jannie 12-20-2011 12:50 PM

Thanks for reposting. I now can save it to my computer. Hopefully, I will be able to print lessons off when I get to that point.

Glad you got it ok this time. Thanks on the baby comment. She is a little doll! So tiny!

Millstream Mom 12-21-2011 09:17 AM

Thank you so much! The 2nd link printed the first 2 pages fine, but the remainder had all the words printed in gibberish (the diagrams came out fine)? I'm going to try printing it again tonight at work

If worse comes to worse...I'll just copy and paste the instructions so I can get a printout and tape them on to the pages with the diagrams :)

Millstream Mom 12-21-2011 03:48 PM

Week 5 - Odds and Ends should be week 6. I have to have Patrice change it for me.

The right week 5 is the Week 5 - More Blocks and Tools

i am SO sorry...i get exasperated when other people don't read all the answers and then I didn't.... thanks, i knew it was 'missing' last week and thought maybe you just took a week off... but then was confused when i saw seven....took me awhile.... will be more patient and more thorough after this.....and by the way...super job on the entire tutorial.... i have enjoyed immensely, having the references to go back to.... some was review and some was entirely new to me...thanks again....

Rhonda 12-22-2011 09:41 AM

I posted a preview of the next lesson. It is on the patchdraw tools. You can create a quilt block that can be used as applique or you can make it a stencil that you can use as a quilt design. You can turn it into templates and it is sooooo easy to do! The tools are alot of fun to use too!

I posted the preview to get questions so I can include them in the lesson. So if you have any questions let me know!

Thanks. Once I am settled in my new place I hope to get to these tutes. Really appreciate your hard work on these.

barbrose 12-27-2011 07:21 AM

the pdf file had error reading document. sorry to brother you but this is week 7 thanks Barbara

quilterella 12-30-2011 10:09 AM

I have been printing off your lessons every week, but for some reason Lesson 7 is not co-operating. Has anyone else had this problem? I can not save it or print it...Help!

QuiltnNan 01-02-2012 07:40 AM

Thank you again, Rhonda. I love your tut's. Just one question, though. Why don't you click on 'size from quilt'? I usually design my quilt to the exact finish size that I want. So 'size from quilt' gives me the exact size of those blocks.

Simple - I don't know how to do that! LOL I haven't seen that step I guess. I know there is alot more in the manual than I have done so far. I figure I will catch up on all the extras along the way. I will check this out and make a note to add it to the extras in the near future. Thanks for pointing that out.

I am a miniaturist and usually only deal with a quilt block not a whole quilt. I have been getting into designing whole quilts but I don't make them. So there is alot about making a large quilt I don't know how to do.
So I am learning alot right along with all of you.

I really appreciate any comments that can send me in the right direction to add these things to my lessons that I might not be aware of. Thanks!
