Hey, I like this idea also. I had heard it years ago and had forgotten about it. Do you have a problem with the dryer sheets being so wrinkled after they come out of the laundry? I don't guess you could iron them, could you? Wouldn't they melt? But this would be great for scrap squares!

Wonky refers to anything that doesn't behave, such as lumpy or crocked quilt blocks or strips. They are hard to work with when sewing them to something straight. Wonky can also refer to something that's not exactly symetrical.
You use tiny machine stitches when sewing to the paper, and then tear it off when you're finished. I think freezer paper would be too hard to tear because of the plastic backing.

I do iron them on a low heat and sometimes put them under a pressing sheet if they are too wrinkled.

Not a silly question in my book. I too am asking about all this paper business. Why is it necessary, what is the purpose of it. Thanks.

QultingaddictUK 01-21-2011 07:29 AM

Been down to the Supermarket and got 2 rolls free  and this is my setup, I am right chuffed as with this tip as it is a superb way to make Piano Key borders  IMO

Who did it? How'd it turn out? Photo?

sewgarden 01-21-2011 02:01 PM

just wondering why you would paper piece these strips. I thought it was more for things with points to get them more accurate

Isn't that messy? The ink would rub off. Smudge the fabric.

It's been posted before, but here it is again: the paper acts as a stablizer while sewing odd-shaped and bias cut pieces, and lets you create a very straight strip, which is impossible without the paper. Leave the paper on unitl you sew the strip to something else, then rip the paper off. Use tiny machine stitches which makes it easier to rip the paper.

Oh well, fabric shop here I come. I love this whole idea of using the paper. Wonky quilt, here I come. Thanks for the tute. Love it.

I like it sort of wonky rather than each piece cut exactly the same and sewn straight..but you can do either
I start with my paper in a box or in the pic you can see I use the thread holder...anything to keep it from rolling all over.
I cut my scraps anywhere from about 1" wide to 1 1/2" wide and about 3 1/2" long.
First you lay one piece right side up on the end of your paper...lay the next strip face down on that and sew as shown using 1/4" seam allowance.. Flip it back and finger press and then lay the next piece face down on that and repeat...I like to sew them at a little angle here and there to make them
"wonky".....continue on as long as you like but I find normally I stopped at
about 1 yard of the piecing and trimmed it as shown and then rolled it up and
continued on...make sense?

Been nice to hear so many are interested in this. Love to see more pictures!

Piano Key Border, hmmm.. sounds interesting, what is that exactly? Like to make one, one that actually looks like piano keys, we've got friends who play music. Think they'd love that touch to the border of their quilts.

StitcherNKnitters 01-27-2011 12:58 PM

Now that's a; cute one quilting addict.
One I think kids would love too.

I have many scraps, I'm always sewing them together, just in case.. hehe. Beats tossing them into the trash.

I'm going to make a pet quilt soon with them.

Kitty Yates 02-07-2011 06:09 AM

I found 12 rolls for about 17.00 at Sams Club. Were 3 1/8" wide. Maybe you can find friends to split a box with you.
