I have some tutorials in my blog thriftyideastoday.com for strip quilts or table runners - example the 9 patch or 12 patch - this is such a great idea using the small scraps on the old register paper.

I found 2- 3" rolls in a bag for $1.00 at Goodwill on Friday, then had to stop at Gordon Food Service, and found a box of 12 marked down for $4.90! I am stocked up & ready to go! Thank you Sue!

I finally tracked down some 3in rolls over here. I could only persuade the shop to sell me two - otherwise they wanted me to buy a whole box (I might go back for them later). Anyway, here is my effort so far.

I addapted a box that originally held a block of note paper to hold my roll. Two holes drilled in it, and an old plastic knitting needle did the trick (I cut it to length).

A couple of large hair grips are keeping things under control at the other trimmed end.

Made a start on my Christmas projects

My adapted roll holder

I think you could drill a plastic holder too if you had the right drill bit

This is the holder as I bought it

And with the cut down plastic knitting needle in place

Really kewl! Lesley. I need to try that. I am working on a crumb quilt.

Quilting Nana 10-20-2010 07:46 AM

I love it. Now I am going to have to go back to thrift store to find one of those boxes.
Thanks.

Thanks.

Sue had a nice holder for her roll, and I had a small cardboard box I could have used, but I like this better as there wasn't anyway I was going to be able to find one like hers.

I also found it easier to cut up scraps in front of the TV so that I had a good box of them to choose from, rather than doing it in front of the machine, which seems to hold up production. I think I could get addicted to these strips.

Jingle 10-20-2010 06:55 PM

Very creative, don't think I would have thought of that. I don't watch much TV, I spend most evenings on this quilt board. Looks like a great way to use up small bits.

sandpat 10-21-2010 05:21 AM

Great idea Lesley for the little box. I had a plastic box like that....its disappeared somewhere..I think your Christmas strips will be fun to work with, they look great!

have you ever tried sewing strips of fabric into a long straight piece? if you havent I tell you your straight piece of finished fabric goes really wonky, but by using the paper(consider it a guide) you will find you have a perfectly straight and beautiful 3in. jumping off place for a large variety of creations. Happy stripping!

Great tutorials, thank you for sharing your ideas and creativity. I like your finished projects and your style.

Quilting Nana 11-09-2010 01:47 PM

I have been collecting scraps but have not found the adding paper. :-(

luckylindy333 11-09-2010 02:33 PM

Thanks Sue! I have seemed to accumulate an inordinate amount of scraps with my latest project. Now I have a way to use them up!

anngi 11-13-2010 12:14 PM

Thanks Sue, great idea for my granddaughters to tackle, they like to see things happening quickly!! A friend just gave me a shoe box full of strips she had finished with so they can start on them. Good job I never throw anything away. Now to find the paper rolls!

I hope you try it and enjoy it

Excellent idea Sue.. I love it.. going to try it soon.

Lilrain 11-13-2010 09:48 PM

This is such a good idea. A long stip of just the pieces without the paper behind would not be very stable. I have purchased some adding maching tapes in different widths and ready to start attaching my scraps , for later use. Thanks so much for sharing this idea

omak 11-15-2010 08:05 AM

I was in to Staples last week.
A young lady in line before me purchased two packages of adding machine paper.
I wasn't brave enough to ask her if she was Board member, but when I saw the rolls, I was sure thinking it! LOL <wave>

klgreene 11-15-2010 09:13 AM

Oh, I would have asked. It would be nice to know someone close to where you live and have the same love of quilting.

Caryn 11-15-2010 09:18 AM

i actually read about this somewhere a few yeaers ago...and now i am gonna go find those receipt rolls i have stashed somewhere. this is a great idea for using up all of those scraps i cant bear to throw out!

I think it was in 2000 that I came up with this

memere9 11-21-2010 04:41 AM

I LOVE THIS I also booked marked it and will try it very soon. I have strips from a dress factory I bought years ago and this will be perfect. i am also going to try to find some larger rolls of paper that i could try to make a larger one

If you find them please let me know. I would love to make larger strings.
I guess I could cut my own but way to much work.

Greenheron 11-26-2010 04:53 PM

Thank you for sharing this idea, especially the roll holder. So nice to sew a bit and come back to do more later. I'll be watching for rolls of paper at the flea markets.

BMP 11-26-2010 05:26 PM

All I can say is WOW !!
Where can I find the pic of the curtains mentioned a few pages back, sounds like something cute to hang in a sewing room.

I just asked hubby if he had tape at his office and I also need a old CD to use to trace for another project, he wanted to know what in the he** was I making now !! LOL

memere9 11-27-2010 03:31 AM

I think I will look into getting some shelf paper at the dollar store.Or having my husband cut a roll in half with a saw I will let you know if I try it. You know I just had another thought as I was writing this. I have made string quilts sewing onto old sheets. Now I have to buy new cheap one riped into blocks why couldn't I ripe them into strips? I'll see. When you use cloth though you have to do a lot of pressing.

Fax paper is @ 8" wide and you often can find it cheap at yard sales or thrift shops

Be careful with thermal paper, it has chemicals in it and can break down fibers.

Thanks, that is a great idea!!!

lclang 11-29-2010 08:02 PM

If you can't find the 3" paper rolls I think you could use lightweight interfacting cut to that width and just leave it on. No ripping off of paper!

SaraSewing 11-29-2010 08:06 PM

VERY interesting! Thanx for the original links of your projects. I had missed them.

That's a great idea. I picked up 5 yards of light weight interfacing for 2.00 I may use that.

easy to use the non thermo side and you take it off right away...for everyday quilts you ue a lot there is definitely no problem..I have done some about 9 yrs ago and they look like new...not use it maybe for heirloom quilts

BMP 11-30-2010 03:06 PM

I cant seem to find 3" I will have to make a trip to staples next time I am that way....

Do you pick and choose your colors as you stip them together , or just zip them up no willie nillie??

nellie 11-30-2010 04:52 PM
