Tink's Mom 11-30-2010 04:58 PM

I found a roll of 6" paper at the thrift shop for 50cents. I did a bit of the piecing just to remind myself what I bought it for.
The shop said that they know there were a couple of other rolls of that paper that weren't sealed. She was going to put it aside for me, for the next time I'm in the area.

Do you pick and choose your colors as you stip them together , or just zip them up no willie nillie??

I try to go willie nillie but do sort of sort the scraps and pull things I really do not like with the majority of the scraps and I do like to make them a little crooked rather than neat and straight and various widths not all the same

Oh that is super...tis a thrifty way to quilt and so fun too...

This is great thanks! Though I don't know where I can find an adding machine to pirate the paper from ;-) (just kidding)

SherrieDLux 12-04-2010 12:24 PM

What in the world is a pantogram? Newbie here, bare with me

Cuddly Quilter 12-08-2010 10:17 AM

This is stunning. I have started a shoe box with cut strips as suggested. That is going well. I am now definitely adding a roll of till tape and going to use my bags of scraps to make a long 'snake'. This will be fun when i am BETWEEN projects.

Thanks for sharing.

I have fallen in LOVE with your 2 quilts.

Great idea. Yesterday my girlfriend bought to our quilt group two rolls of adding machine tape for all of us. She told us that she will send the tutorial which i just viewed and I am amazed at all of the possibilities...they are endless. When she gave them to us, I did not imagine this many quilts with just a roll of adding machine tape. What a creative idea for paper piecing. I think that quilters should run this country. Now, I believe that I can do anything thanks to my quilting friend who brought this idea to me and my cyberfriend for putting this idea out there for her to find. Now I must get to work. Thanks girlfriends, you are the bestest.

I just found out that one of those tall thread holders for cone thread works well for this.

jeaninmaine 01-16-2011 07:09 PM

This is such a terrific idea. Thanks so much for sharing it. I love your quilts.

Thanks so much...I just love the scrappies

Shirleyg 01-18-2011 01:20 PM

I don't understand the part about using paper. I have done about the same thing as reversable quilts. Use a 10 inch square of batting then put a piece of fabric face up midway of the batting. Next piece is sewn on right sides together then flipped and continue until the batting is full. Turn it over and repeat same process. You then have a reversable quilt.

feffertim 01-18-2011 08:36 PM

I assume you remove the paper after you are done sewing ? Or do you leave it on the roll ?

You remove it...comes off easily as adding machine paper is pretty cheap and i just mist it and steam press it..falls off practicallly

wudbquilter 01-19-2011 06:09 PM

many thanks that is the one I was looking for am going on a weekend sewing spree and wanted to show this one thanks again

GeriP 01-20-2011 02:43 AM

I just started sewing my scraps onto 2 1/2 in adding machine paper that's been hanging around for years. I made my first one yard piece yesterday. What a great idea and way to use up scraps. Thank you for sharing. I'm on a mission to make lots and lots of scrap projects.

Can't find the right size adding machine paper? Consider cutting newspaper strips the size you need. I use my paper cutter or the rotary cutter with old blades that I save for paper cutting.

good idea that would work..could even tape pieces together to make lonnnnnnnnnnng strips

djw 01-20-2011 09:54 AM

I have never tried this, but just a thought after reading you post. Why wouldn't the rolls of paper "tape" that is used when you tape and bed new sheet rock work? It should be cheap and easy to find.

If you tape them together, be sure to put the tape where you won't be sewing through it. Otherwise, sewing through tape will gum up your needle/machine.

MillieH 01-20-2011 09:59 AM

This thread had two great tips (one happened by chance) from Sue: Piecing strips on adding machine paper and using a golf tee to keep thread spool and bobbin together. Think hard, Sue. What other great tips can you share with us?

MillieH 01-20-2011 10:01 AM

djw, the sheetrock tape I'm familiar with is heavy. It would be difficult to tear off afterward.

djw 01-20-2011 10:18 AM

Never thought about that. But, as I said, I have never done this before and it was just a thought! Now, I know not to try it!

AnngelAnne 01-20-2011 10:22 AM

why would you sew them to paper?

AnnieH 01-20-2011 10:34 AM

Great tips. Please post a pic when you've done the top.

quilter64779 01-20-2011 10:41 AM

I too bookmarked it. Will be trying it after my crazy quilt

AngieS 01-20-2011 01:21 PM

That is so neat Sue!! Kind of like a different form of a Jelly Roll. Awesome!!

The word is really "pantograph." This refers to the long paper patterns used by longarm quilters. The quilter follows the design on the paper pattern with a laser pointer or stylus, while the machine stitches on the quilt.

Where the panto goes on the machine.

An example of a simple panto I drew.

I started with a hat-box labeled "small pieces" because I couldn't bear to throw away anything! Now it has grown to 4 boxes! But a hat box is the perfect size because it is wide and not deep. (I'm referring to men's western hats, not the octagon or round boxes that ladies' hats come in.) Ha! A shoe box would never have been large enough! Anyway, now I have a good way to use these pieces! Thanks to everyone who embellished on this idea!

lkhansen 01-20-2011 04:14 PM

Where do you find 3 inch paper on rolls?

Thanks, K

lkhansen 01-20-2011 04:19 PM

Ding a Ding....

Read more messages about calculator paper. But, isn't it fairly thick and heavy? Would it tear that easy?

Thanks again, K

frenchrose 01-20-2011 04:24 PM

I know tjis may seem really dumb but why do you use paper with it and are you making a jelly roll?

Shemjo 01-20-2011 04:27 PM

Not making a jelly roll. The paper acts as a stabilizer. If you try to sew scraps together, they go off on their own in a wonky direction. It is difficult to keep it straight. Adding machine paper is straight, and it will keep your scraps straight. Simple solution to wonky strips.

Rosyhf 01-20-2011 04:30 PM

I sew all sorts of shapes together using my old dryer sheets. I will also sew strips on them and just collect them until I had enough to design with. Even the tiniest pieces can be sewed. What great about this technique is that you have the blocks already.
