Actually it does not take that long. The one quilt is 40 by 40. I paint what I want to change and put the fabric by the fan so it dries fast. There were not many pieces since the rose was cut as one piece. The quilting was on my little machine so that took longer. It was less than two weeks but I had to travel to teach over one of the weekends and also get ready for that and recover.

Poakie 03-26-2011 08:03 AM

O WOW! Gorgeous.

That is awesome and thank you so much for sharing your techinique. Someday, well it's on my bucket list now.

SewExtremeSeams 03-26-2011 09:01 AM

Smaller is better for trying any technique out. Then you get to know what you are doing and do a larger one. Make your bo bo's on a pot holder.

meanmom 03-26-2011 10:04 AM

I absolutely love your quilt. It is something I am going to have to try. Thanks for the tutorial. What kind of dye or paint do you use. Words can't describe how impressed I am.

grammysharon 03-26-2011 10:33 AM

Wow, another beautiful stained glass quilt. I have done stained glass with the bias but I think the yarn looks much easier and cleaner. Thanks for sharing another masterpiece.

I start with a real stained glass pattern, one meant to be cut from glass. Dover Publications is a great source. They can be blown up by printing companies.

The applique process for the pieces of fabric are exactly the same as for regular applique that you would be doing a saten stitch on the edge. Oh, my, gosh! Those really are beautiful! I'm going to have to try that method for putting yarn on a quilt and I have just the project to try it on. thanks, "cat"

Trace your pattern on the backside of the of the pattern.
Trace your pieces on paper backed fusible web allowing for overlap where two pieces meet..

Messy cut ou the paper backed fusible web
Iron pattern pieces onto back of fabic

Cut the pattern pieces out on the exact lines

Iron the applique pieces to your background fabric. I put my paper pattern undernearth my background fabric and glue them on with a glue stick. I tape my pattern to the window, tape my background to the window and then use the glue stick on my applique pieces

Iron the applique pieces to your backgroud fabric.

Quilt the piece now before putting on the leading lines. You can travel on the lines where the "leading" is going to be put.

Now we are ready for the "leading" or in this case the yarn. I use Red Heart 2 ply black yarn. Why because it is available in my small town. Others will work.

Deb,

Your work is beautiful. Thank you for the tutorial.

I love stained glass patterns from Dover. I've collected quite a few over the years with the intention of doing quilts. However, as you say, the little pieces and the bias tape have caused me to wonder how I could put them together cleanly. Your method has made all the difference.

I hope you show us more of your work. You are a great inspiration.

WOW!! They are amazing. Absolutely breathtaking - you must be so proud!!

HELA46 03-26-2011 04:31 PM

The stained glass quilts are a work of art. I re-read the tutorial several times before I got the "light bulb".....although something I still don't understand, before you do the black leading, do you sandwich the layers into a quilt, and outline the image, or do you do all of the design and then sandwich and quilt. Also do you do the "overs and unders" with the leading as with the bias one.

bucksprt 03-26-2011 05:49 PM

Drooling here. Your work is beautiful. Thank you for the tute but I am such a newbie, should have started in kindergarden and maybe I would be able to do that in my lifetime. Thank you for sharing. I can still dream.

BATIKQLTR 03-27-2011 11:39 AM

OMG I can't wait to try this on a much smaller scale. I used to do stained glass until my fingers got so much arthritis in them. I have oodles of pattern books. I've tried with the bias tape, but just wasn't happy with the end results.

Thank you so much for showing us this method!!!!

Your pictures are just beautiful!!!

Thanks for the tuteoria! Your work is stunning and amazing!

jeaninmaine 03-27-2011 01:07 PM

Ohhhh, this is simply breathtaking. I love the colors you used. I don't suppose you have a driving urge to write a tutorial on how to do the fabric painting, do you??? You do such a wonderful job of it and it's always great to learn from someone who can accomplish something like you've done.

sjscribe 03-27-2011 04:31 PM

Oh my gosh! Absolutely stunning! I hope that one day I have the skill to be able to attempt this technique.

Prairie Quilter 03-27-2011 04:51 PM

Your Morning Glories are simply breath-taking!!! WOW & WOW again. Stunning!
