This tutorial will show you how to make this Twisted Log Cabin without paper peicing. It is a easy block to make, but it is time consuming!

Start with a 2 inch block, or any size you want.

fryguymoore 12-10-2010 05:02 PM

Cut about 4 or 5 strips the width of the fabric that are 1 3/4 inches wide. I make them bigger than needed to allow for poor cutting and poor sewing

Cut two strips the size of a side [in this case it will be 2 inches], as you can see. I just eye-ball it and cut.

I hope you can see from the picture that the piece you just cut needs to be sewn on before you continue :)

This step is the secret to this process and is how this can be done without paper piecing. If you don’t get it here, please keep reading, it is easier to see as the piece gets bigger.

The red dots represent the corners where the pink fabric meets with the black. Match these points on the Fabric with the white lines on the Ruler. You will have to move the ruler around a bit until Both dots are on the line. As shown, leave ¼ inch above the left hand dot [this is your seam allowance], and 1 ¼ inch above the right hand dot. Once you are all lined up, you can cut.

The only error you can make that is upsetting could happen on this step. To avoid this possible error, make sure you have ¼ above the right hand dot, this is your seam allowance and if you cut it off you will not be happy!

Here you will be cutting on the Red line. (my picture is wrong and I can't fix it tonight because my internet is down. The Red line should be 1/4 onch from the corner of the 2 inch square. I will change the picture tomorrow) Before you cut make sure the White line is lined up with any line on the ruler. In the picture I have lined it up with the 2 ½ inch line on the ruler. Basically all you are doing here is making it square.

Next,

Cut the next strips

Sew them on

Do the same thing on the other side. To make the second triangle, turn the block 180 degrees anddo the Exact same thing. These triangles will not have sides of the same length.

All you are doing her is squaring it up. Use the two pink pieces that you already sewed on and trimmed as your guide. The white arrow points to my Error. There should be ¼ inch between the point and the side. Mine is really, really, off so I will just make a smaller seam :-)

Continue squaring. Again, the arrow points to my error

Now, you just keep doing that over and over again. Once the piece gets bigger you may want to conserve fabric by...

...not cutting the tail off. You will sew along the dotted line.

Use the piece you cut off here.

One last reminder. Leave the seam allowance - - Can you tell I cut it off once? It was devistating to take out two layers :hunf:

I really hope this is clear. My DH is trying it, I'll let you know how he does.

I would love to see what you make if you are able to follow this. If not, please ask questions.

Color variation. This was sent to Norbana for a swap

Thanks! That is so neat!

sueisallaboutquilts 12-10-2010 07:32 PM

What a great block! I couldn't help chuckling at the cat face- so cute! :)
Thanks a lot. I really want to do this!!

cheryl rearick 12-10-2010 07:34 PM

how beautiful, I'm going to try it this week end. I've seen it in a book and by passed as I'm pretty new and thought no way can I do that. Thank you so very much for the lesson.

fryguymoore 12-10-2010 07:46 PM

I found an error, and I can no longer edit :(. When you cut the strips you will sew onto the side they have to be at least 1/2 and inch bigger than the side you sew it to. The first strip should be 2 1/2 inches not 2 inches like I said. It is best to go about an inch bigger.

I feel like this tutorial isn't that great. My poor DH was able to make the block but it seemed hard for him. I probably shouldn't make too much out of that. The first thing he said me was ,"Is this the inch mark?" Right after that he used the 1/8 mark as the 1/4!!!! You guys are much smarter than that ;)

cjomomma 12-10-2010 08:17 PM

Thank you, I have it booked marked. This will be project number 1285! LOL!!

mrspete 12-10-2010 08:45 PM

Oh I love this, it looks pretty simple if you keep your mind on it........oh boy do I drift off the mark. But I want to try it, too. What size did you block end up or do you just keep going until you get what you want??? a OBW? or make many smaller blocks ??? curious

I stopped when I got to 12 1/2 inches. With all those seams and my 1/4 seam so far from perfect I would never be exact enough to make specific size.after the first few layers you don't have to think too much!

leakus 12-10-2010 09:07 PM

Thanks fryguymoore!! I will try it and I'll let you know if I understood.
Love

Iluv2quilt 12-10-2010 09:24 PM

My gosh, that is beautiful! I really it!! It looks so complicated to make and you did a wonderful job on your block!! thumbup:

I just read the instructions, and am really confused, I can't get past the first step.

Obsessed 12-11-2010 04:21 AM

I'd been admiring your avatar - thanks for the tutorial! I'm going to try this on a doll quilt I'm making for my daughter for Christmas...

quilt3311 12-11-2010 04:40 AM

Thank you, I think I get it and will try it after the holidays.

stitchinwitch 12-11-2010 05:22 AM

Thank you so much - the finished first block is VERY nice - without foundation piecing, did you have any problem with stretching?

sandpat 12-11-2010 06:05 AM

Thanks...I'll add it to my list, but I have to admit that I might find it easier to PP. I'm a little "ruler challenged" at time, much like your DH.

JeanDal 12-11-2010 06:56 AM

This looks so awesome! Just put it on my to do list.

amma 12-11-2010 07:41 AM

Thank you for the tute :D:D:D

Barbara Ann Fields 12-11-2010 07:54 AM

Wow! Thanks. I understand. Maybe that is because I am fairly new to quilting and I am self taught. I will do this to sit on my table when I move (next month). This I know I can do. I am glad I keep reading so that I will cut the right size to allow for the seam allowance. I am curious if you can make it bigger for a wall hanging? (I would put it on the wall near the table.

kwiltkrazy 12-11-2010 08:44 AM

Husband isn't dumb, just out of his element. I also fish and people are amased that I can tell how long something is(like when tying knots, and I leave exactly 1/4 tail. They can't understand how I do it.)

Sounds followable, but, I have the perfect example to follow. I love the block you made for me.

thanks so much for posting the tutorial.. can hardly wait to give it a try.

Cuddly Quilter 12-11-2010 10:36 AM

Thank you very much. This is going to be exciting to try. I see 3 different blocks you have already made, so i will be expecting to see a quilt filled with them - correct?

EagarBeez 12-11-2010 10:51 AM

what a nice block, thank you for sharing

Barbara Lee 12-11-2010 12:13 PM

I've bookmarked it so I can give it a try after the Holidays. Great tute.

ladyshuffler 12-11-2010 12:21 PM

Thanks I will put this on my list!!

Rachel 12-11-2010 01:52 PM

Love this block. Seems like there is a lot of waste though. :(

I saw it and instantly thought of the two fabrics in my stash I've been saving for the perfect pattern, and I think I may have just found it!

crankygran 12-11-2010 01:58 PM

The process seems a lot like Jodie Barrows Square in a square technique. If you can do that one this one should be easy.

patski 12-11-2010 02:29 PM

this is just beautiful. I am going to try it :P

CarrieAnne 12-11-2010 02:51 PM

Thanks!

EasyPeezy 12-11-2010 03:01 PM

Very neat. Thanks for sharing. :D

irma tapia 12-11-2010 04:35 PM

That is beautiful and very interesting......I don't think I would be able to do it, it looks hard and right now I need easy. I guess if I had more time to study it I could do it.

PKITTY1 12-11-2010 04:52 PM

Looks interesting. Will have to try it. Thanks for the excellent tutorial.

Quiltin'Lady 12-11-2010 05:41 PM

This is terrific and so beautiful! Thanks for sharing your great tute with us...
