The word is really "pantograph." This refers to the long paper patterns used by longarm quilters. The quilter follows the design on the paper pattern with a laser pointer or stylus, while the machine stitches on the quilt.

I started with a hat-box labeled "small pieces" because I couldn't bear to throw away anything! Now it has grown to 4 boxes! But a hat box is the perfect size because it is wide and not deep. (I'm referring to men's western hats, not the octagon or round boxes that ladies' hats come in.) Ha! A shoe box would never have been large enough! Anyway, now I have a good way to use these pieces! Thanks to everyone who embellished on this idea!

Read more messages about calculator paper. But, isn't it fairly thick and heavy? Would it tear that easy?

I know tjis may seem really dumb but why do you use paper with it and are you making a jelly roll?

Not making a jelly roll. The paper acts as a stabilizer. If you try to sew scraps together, they go off on their own in a wonky direction. It is difficult to keep it straight. Adding machine paper is straight, and it will keep your scraps straight. Simple solution to wonky strips.

I sew all sorts of shapes together using my old dryer sheets. I will also sew strips on them and just collect them until I had enough to design with. Even the tiniest pieces can be sewed. What great about this technique is that you have the blocks already.
