Patrice and I tossed some ideas around to add some spark to Block of the Month and came up with an idea. A BOM that has a theme, one that offers something for everyone, new and experienced quilters alike. I went back over the URR thread and saw the interest that was created as several members were making their blocks. And I came up with the idea for a Pioneer BOM Sampler.

The roots of quilting go back to when quilts were made out of necessity, the blocks were simplistic in design and went together with ease, simply because there wasn't time to spend on them. But the quilts were gorgeous! :)

Pioneer BOM Sampler will make use of the vintage blocks, that even today are appealing to quilters. Ohio Star, Jacob's Ladder, Shoo Fly, just to name a few, each steeped in the history of quilting and what drew us all to this fabulous hobby. :)

This is a great project to let your creativity flow, quilts of years gone by were patchwork quilts, everything but the kitchen sink went into them, if you want to make all the blocks with a particular theme, or go scrappy you can...the sky is the limit. :)

New quilters please don't shy away or be intimidated because these blocks are not difficult and will give you a feeling of accomplishment as you finish each block. Not to mention the fun of participating, being part of a group and seeing everyone's efforts. :)

We'll do one block on the 12th of each month. If there is lots of interest we can switch to two blocks a month. Anyone interested in participating, please send me a PM. I will post the list here. :)

    Let's have some fun! :)

Hi. Sent you a pm, but had a question, too. When we choose a BOM, do we also need to try to find the historical info on the block and share that?

That's an excellent question bj. I'll leave that up to the individual, if you want to provide some history wonderful, but it's not a requirement. :)

Question: How do we know if the block we choose is a pioneer block?

    Any suggestions?

I think a Pioneer BOM is a great idea! Can't wait to get started!

I have been trying to do some research on pioneer blocks and not finding too much. The blocks have so many different names.

Do you want to know what block we are going to do ahead of time?

If you want to let me know ahead of time, I can list that on your month. That way every one will know what blocks are taken. :)

SD, just realized that the Prairie Queen is a variation of the Hole in the Barn Door. I'll keep looking. It was also the BOM for this past August - no wonder I thought it looked familiar.

I have a book called The Quilter's Block Bible that gives history/tidbits of about 150 blocks. It's by Celia Eddy.
