I read that some of you recycle your old cutting mats by cutting them up. What do you use to cut them with?

I'd be interested in finding out what you use them for after cutting. Are they to be used as templates?
Mug Rugs? Place mats for cups or dripping glasses?

I've heard that people use them for the bottoms of tote bags and purses and they can be cut with tin snips. Haven't done it myself yet.
