Post 12" Bears Paw

Does anyone know the size of squares for a 12" Bears Paw? All I can find is 14", all 2". Will try to reduce pattern on copier for 12". Not very good at math. Or a website? I have looked hi & low. Am making 12" star blocks.
Thanks for any help.....

I think Eleanor Burns uses 12 inch bear paws. Check her site 'quilt in a day' and find her video section. She does bear paws in her Christmas at Bear Paw's Ranch book.

the reason you're finding a 14" bear's paw pattern is that the pattern typically uses a 49-patch grid (7 x 7). I think of the bear's paw pattern as 4 paws joined together by a middle unit. You could probably adjust the pattern slightly by using 1 3/4" finished triangles and background square and a 3 1/2" finished colored square for each "paw" - each paw would finish at 5 1/4" (5 3/4" unfinished) The middle unit would then finish at 1 1/2" (cut at 2") for a 12" finished block. It wouldn't be exactly a bear's paw block, but would make the math easier.

I don't know what happened to the colors. I will try it again.

qbquilts is correct - in order to get a 12" block, you'd have to cut the individual squares at 1.71 inches, and I don't even want to TRY to figure out what size to cut the HSTs at! The math just doesn't work.

However - if you REALLY want to make it that size, here are some templates I printed from EQ for you. Good luck!

Thanks for any help.....
4.5 inch finished Bear Paw block:
(Cutting instructions)
1 square 3.5 inches x 3.5 inches
1 square background (low volume fabric) 2 inches x 2 inches
AND for Half Square Triangles:
2 squares background (low volume fabric) 2.5 inches x 2.5 inches
2 squares contrast fabric 2.5 inches x 2.5 inches

Square finishes at 5X5…. Including seam allowance … use 4 and sashing for your 12.5 inch block...

6 Inch FINISHED Bear Paw Block:
For each Bear Paw Block cut:
1 square 4.5" x 4.5" (for large part of bear paw…. )
1 square background (low volume) fabric 2.5" x 2.5"

For the Half Square Triangles:
1 square background (low volume) fabric 4.5 inches x 4.5 inches
1 square contrast fabric 4.5 inches x 4.5 inches ( place right sides together)
Sew all the way around the two pieces ¼” seam and cut diagonally both ways…
yields 4 Half square triangle’s…. (Trim the HST's to measure 2.5 inches x 2.5 inches each)

Block measures 6.5 inches x 6.5 inches - including seam allowances.
(use 4 to make a finished 12.5 inch block, including seam allowances)
this does not have the sashing in between the bear paw blocks ...

hope this helps....

You could modify the block a bit by changing the proportions.

See attached.
