I love making FG blocks, no idea why. These finish 1 1/2 x 3. Yes small and will be using them in my rail fence quilt. First hint is to cut accurately. I have to cuz these are smaller than I usually make. Second is to sew slowly. Again I have to because of the size.

There is a "No Waste Method for Making Flying Geese". Makes 4 and the secret is when you cut the (B) pieces make sure you use the 7/8" not 1" !!
Just Google for the 1 page of instructions and be happy ever after!!

I recently tried the goose fabric placed on a larger sky fabric square method to make 4 flying geese at a time and really liked it. I think both Harriet Hargrave and Eleanor Burns have rulers to help with the math and trimming, but I didn’t find a speciality ruler was needed. I liked that you make them a bit larger, then trim the final units to size.

I think at one time or another, I have tried every ruler (and now what do I do with them?) and/or written method for making flying geese, and none of them worked for me. So now I do them paper-piecing and love the way they come out.

Glad you were able to find a way that you like and works for you.

Thanks for the links. I've never bought and used a pattern, but this one intrigues me. I prefer wavy or curved seam lines. This quilt gives the illusion of waves.

I paper piece flying geese or use the one seam method for small projects. Recently I have been making a lot of the staggered flying geese for borders. They are fun to make. I took a flying geese class one time where we learned to draft and curve the rows of geese in graduating size. It was not fun and I have never made them again.

I too like making Fying Geese years ago I made a queen size quilt for my MIL. It was scrappy and lines of FG. I can't wait to see your RF with these FG blocks it sounds so exciting.

I used to cringe every time a pattern called for flying geese. No matter which method I used, they never turned out evenly, until I tried the 4 at a time method I found on Generations Quilt Patterns. Using her method the geese come out a little oversized so you do need to trim them down, but there really isn’t much waste. Now my geese come out perfectly every time!

I use Eleanor Burns FG templates and really get an accurate block every time. I have all size templates and use them all of the time when I make FG
