I have a very dear friend that I was in the AF with that is retiring next year...thank goodness I have a year to get her quilt done!

I have a square panel that I bought from this board that has AF emblem on it. I also have jelly rolls with red, white and blue patriotic colors and also a couple of yards of fabric with US flag. I assumed I would put the emblem in the middle then build from there but not sure how to do that and what to do next. I'm thinking lap quilt size.

Can you please offer ideas on how to make a nice, SIMPLE quilt with the above pieces? I'm new to quilting and at this time haven't done anything that involves triangles or complex pieces.

Thanks in advance for your ideas. I'm tired of looking through magazines and online for ideas :) Pictures would also be very helpful. Dianna

There is a beautiful one on the board with log cabins. I'll see if I can find it.

You didn't mention how big your AF emblem is, but can it be worked in the center of this type of pattern:

the emblem measures 17x15 1/2 and has white stars around. I know I should post picture and will try to do that soon. I'll bookmark the page your recommended Bonbonary and also see what other suggestions come my way. Thanks for the response.

I think I would make one of what she will be doing in a near future once retired..Hobbies? and maybe a few AF blocks. Maybe pictures of places she was staioned...the towns and places she saw over the years while she traveled. My son is also in the service and the best part is all the places he has been and seen.

If you live close to her and know some of the people she works with you could do simple rwb rail fence blocks and have people she works with sign the white rails. Make it like an autograph quilt.

LoriE love both sites! Thanks everyone for the wonderful ideas. I'm motivated to get started on this very special quilt. I'm going to have a label made with her rank, name and dates of service. It will be one of a kind for sure.
