A pattern I want to start states: 8 1/2" strips WOF; crosscut into. What does that mean? WOF is salvage to salvage, but what is crosscut into?????

I think that you then cut your strips into the next size, rectangles, squares, etc.

Width of fabric is cut 8.5 inches wide, then it is is cut into a smaller piece. They must tell you how to cut it further.

That is correct. It might say cut 8 strips 8-1/2" wide by WOF (width of fabric) then crosscut (might say sub-cut) into 3-1/2 pieces.

Mama bear is correct. Lets say you cut the width of fabric to 4" first, then you will cut the strips, croswise into 4" pieces and you have 4" bolcks. Do whatever the pattern calls for, as they could become retangles or triangles. I hope this helps.
