Hi everyone,

I'm doing Hop To It as a BOM at my LQS and I've never done any hand applique before now, well actually I'm also doing BOM as well doing the freezer paper method with Basic Baltimore which is also a BOM I'm doing ok with that.

I'm looking for any tutorial or info on the back basting it's not the easiest thing to find on You Tube and Google I think I have found one tutorial so far in my searching so I'm wondering if anyone on here can offer any guidance on the back basting method. Thank you everyone in advance for any info. at the LQS class we've got 20 people doing this BOM and two hours isn't always enough time in class.

I am not familiar with the term back basting. Do you mean basting the edges under before appliqueing? This is done when doing English Paper Piecing like the hexagons for Grandmother Flower Garden. Or do you mean the appliqué stitch that attaches the appliqué to the background?

I think it's a method for doing turned edge hand applique. You hand baste the applique fabric to the background following the outline of your shape and trim the fabric around the basting stitches. You snip a couple of basting stitches, turn under the edge, applique, and continue around like that. I found this tutorial which seems fairly detailed:

I have the Back-Basting book by Barbara Eikmeier. You do get the most of it off the link above. She gives a few tips and skims some general stuff, but it's half practice pieces and a bit light on real information or instruction.

Thanks everyone I will check all of the links out! Maybe since I'm a newbie at this I might try and make my own tutorial once I get the hang of it. The problem is she's not following the instructions in the book (which doesn't help) she said she wanted to teach us an older way of doing it (back basting). I will definitely check out the links today and the book.
