The cream is calming, the yellow is exciting. Depends on what you want the quilt for. I personally would go for the yellow.

For me it would definitely be the first choice.

Personally, I think the yellow is a bit much, however, truth be told, I'm not a big fan of yellow. That said, I like using a bright white with Batiks for strong contrast. But whichever background, it's your quilt and if yellow speaks to you, t hen yellow it should be, however, the beige is just not right IMHO. Those are some gorgeous batiks.

Ditto, they are too beautiful to drown out with yellow

Of the two, I would use the cream. But I'm using a similar (but MUCH smaller) palette for my Fiesta quilt and the black background is absolutely gorgeous. http://www.fatcatpatterns.com/Fiesta.html

If you really don't like black, I would find the darkest gray in one of the batiks and go a little bit darker in value than that darkest gray - either a dull Navy, dull brown, dull green, but a very dark shade of whatever color you choose, so that the darkest gray doesn't fade into the background.

A dull, dark color can be beautiful - those applique fabrics will really shine and sparkle when the background isn't competing for attention.

I like the cream one best. Unless you decide to go with black!
