I have been reading about which battings to use most are talking about quilting distance and breathability. If I use a minky type backing how does that play into the choice of batting? Does that cancel the breathability? What about the crinkled look? I have been asked to make 4 memory quilts with the cotton shirts she is looking into the plush type colors for backing. Now which batting will work best? She lives in south AL.

If she lives in southern AL, you might not need batting at all. If batting is required, I suggest a low loft 100% cotton.

I haven't quilted a quilt using minky, though, so others may have better insight on your question than I do.

Here in NE Texas we don't need a heavy quilt, but I have used minky with and without batting. My DGD wanted a very warm quilt to carry to football games, she is in the band, and wanted batting and fleece on the back. It was not that hard to quilt and is very heavy. It turned out great.

I have made several baby quilts with minkee on the back. If you go without batting you are really making a throw since it is not 3 layers. I have quilted through just the two layers and makes a great blanket to take baby out in. With the batting it is more for napping etc!! If you use batting use very thin as the quilt gets heavy!! Ask me how I know!!! LOL!

I used bamboo batting, which is thin, and it turned out great. Warm, but not overly warm and not overly heavy.
