Default Best needle and thread for machine applique.

I need to do a lot of button hole stitch on a wall hanging and I want it to turn out nice. What weight thread and what needle should I use? Thanks in advance.

It depends if you want your buttonhole stitch to stand out or blend in. Black cotton Sulky 30 weight is nice for standing out. If you want it to blend- 50 weight Aurifil that matches your appliqué. Change it each time you get to a new fabric. A topstitch needle or microtex needle is nice.

I use a blind hemstitch rather than a button hole stitch for invisible machine applique. My current favorite is Bottom Line thread (a 60wt polyester) and a size 70 Microtex needle. This is the finest needle available and the sharp Microtex point creates the smallest holes.

I would definitely practice on a fabric scrap or two with several different threads to get the look you want.

I am currently working on a fusible applique project with a blanket stitch (also sometimes referred to as a buttonhole stitch). I am using Wonderfil's Decobob, an 80 wt poly and it is really working well. The stitches are not obvious at all.
