I have heard that some sewists are just using 1 layer of batting in the bowl cozy and say they still work fine for the microwave. That sounds good and would be a lot less bulk but would you somehow have to fasten the single piece of fabric to the piece with the batting? I know the darts would match. Just wondering if anyone here has just used 1

i never knew we were "supposed to" use 2 layers. i use one layer, stitch through the batting and then trim the batting to as close as i can safely trim from the stitching.

I do the same and find they work just fine that way, too. Turning them out and topstitching are the toughest part of the project for me.

I’m another user of one layer. I like them better that way.

I use one layer also and quilt an X from point to point to hold them together. I got so worried that someone would microwave them and they would catch on fire, I had iron on labels made that say, Do NOT Microwave. Cotton burns. They are used as bowl hot pads only.

I use the Wrap and Zap batting made for use in microwave. Never had one burn. When I started making them years ago I put fabric covered batting, using different batting, in the microwave to see how long it took to burn. I remember Warm and Natural did not get hot. No wrap and Zap made then, but I would test any batting first before using. Any food spills on the fabric will cause it to burn.

I use one layer too. I too was unaware of needing two. Never had any issues.

Thamks everyone for your comments. I will definitely try the 1 layer of batting only. The only thing I’m still not sure of is how to keep the 3 layers connected once it’s done. Maybe I’m over thinking it, I’m just trying to think if the one piece of fabric that isn’t sewn to a piece of batting if it will stay put when washing.

I use one layer. I wait until I have turned and top stitched the cozy before sewing the X through all 3 layers. It isn’t hard to do, and it looks very neat that way. And I have made hundreds with Wrap N Zap without issue. If anyone thinks the Pellon lawyers have not exhaustively insured the Wrap N Zap won’t catch fire when used in the microwave, they don’t know large companies and lawyers! With the specialized batting it is perfectly safe to use in the microwave as indicated. But then again, some people prefer their own “research” to that of scientists and engineers.
