I am working on a king size quilt with large blocks (21.5") that are set on point. It is tedious and on the heavier side for running through my machine with all that paper still on it. What I want to know is, can I take some of the paper off of the inner blocks before sewing on the first border or should I leave all the paper on it until I get one or all the borders on ...... or should I take all of the paper off, iron it then add the borders???


This is only my second large paper pieced project but the size for this one and the "on point" is what I am not sure about.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cute quilt! I take the paper off as soon as all the edges of the blocks are joined. As you suggest, I would take the paper off the inner blocks & leave it on the edge that will be joined to the border. Then remove.

I would have taken the paper off and pressed and trimmed to size before sewing the blocks together. It may help now if you spritz the back with water to soften the paper, and don't fuss over any tiny pieces left behind.

Yes, you can remove some of the paper. The paper will prevent the bias edges from stretching. Once the block is totally enclosed it will be safe to remove the paper.

definitely you can take out some of the middle! Looks like a cool quilt!

Gay. Thank you for your suggestion. My pieces are fairly large so my biggest part with fussing with the paper will be in all the seams. Here's a close up of one of the blocks, they are elephants.

Thank you. The pattern created elephants. The bride for whom I am making the quilt for picked out the colors she wanted. It looks better together the it looked on the bolts at the store.

Thank you. I was hoping it would be ok to do it that way. I have always heard that you should leave all the paper on until the top was completed but doing a quilt this size I started looking at it and thinking,'what would it hurt if I took out the center pieces?' Sounds like I will be ok and I'm happy about that.

Cute elephants! I'd remove inner block papers, and leave outer ones until borders are sewn on~
