I'm doing the same bear!!!! I hope mine is as beautiful as yours. Thanks for the posting, I hadn't a clue how to finish this guy off. I believe I'm going to do the single line of stitching through the pieces on my machine. Great idea!!!

It's just a wall hanging, about 36" square. Most of the time so far is in the preparation - tracing the pattern onto clear vinyl and each piece onto fusible, lightly pressing the paper pattern pieces onto fabric, and the really time-consuming part, cutting out each piece. The bear's fur is very jagged. That's a good project to do while watching TV. I started it for a class several months ago, got only part of the nose finished in class, then put it aside thinking I would need a big chunk of time to finish up. When I did start up again, I put the whole thing together in a few hours, added the borders the next day. I do think the quilting will take a while.

I did an advanced FMQ workshop with her last week and she's wonderful! :-D
Her work is incredible. I saw that quilt of nude with a rope (or a copy of it) in the Innovations quilt show in Tacoma last year.

I have raw edge stitched on my shortarm on frame...I just sewed very close to the edge of the shape...no zigzag. It came out great!

or are you confusing quilting with stitching your appliques down?
2 different things- raw edge applique simply means the edges are not turned under- usually *but not always* fused to hold in place- then secured with stitching- either a blanket stitch, zig-zag-satin stitch or even a straight stitch. quilting holds your 3 layers together- enhances and finishes the quilt design.
some people do thread painting with their long-arms.
you can do it any way you want that gives you the results you are looking for
Well, that was part of the original question, whether to stitch the edges down before building the quilt sandwich. It sounds like a lot of people have done it that way so I'm probably going to try it too.

I've been following her blog for a long time. Her work is AWESOME.

I was trying to figure out how and if I could drop off some quilt tops in the UK on my way to locations further east, and then pick them up a month later on my way back, but the timing didn't work.

I just love bears! Nice work, but I can't help with your question.
