    Default Carpenter's Star Quilt

My Carpenter's Star quilt is a disaster. This is not my first quilt, but is my first Carpenter's Star. I have ponder this quilt pattern for 3 years now. The color coordination is wrong, points don't match, some nautical fabric is upside down and crossways. Brought this fabric in June 2011 to make a quilt for my dad. Can't find the same nautical fabric, but did find a different kind. His favorite color is blue and I wanted to use the nautical fabric because it reminds me of when we used to go too Colon, MI. where we had a house with the lake at the end of the back yard; where we would fish all the time. (Not a good fisher, LOL). All suggestions are welcome. Need to have this done before I go to Chicago in July, he will be looking for it.

I really like the one big block Carpenter's Star quilt. Working with big pieces of fabric would be quicker and easier.

Here is what I did and made a large star and and then added the border. This will go quicker than the smaller blocks.

Love the gray and red combo and the gray strips to make it longer. Great idea. This size would go much quicker! You could have it done in a day.

Don't be so hard on yourself. It's OK if the fabrics don't all go in the same direction. With a quilt on your bed, you are looking at it from the same direction all the time.

In the grand scheme of things, people we give quilts to, don't notice those things. Unless they are the quilt police!
I say, keep going on it, and he will love it. It's a labor of love.

I would also go with the 'big block' quilt. Count this as a learning experience making HST with directional prints. If you want them to all go the same direction, it takes planning & possibly additional fabric. Same thing with striped fabrics, or if you want to fussy cut. Knowing when you need to buy additional fabric to deal with the print is something that you learn in garment construction, but I haven't seen discussed too much in quilting.

    Picture might be too big:
