I purchased a "circle cutter" ruler, one in which you put the folded piece of fabric on a line and then with a rotary wheel (small - 28 mm) cut out the circle.

I have tried this on a bunch of scraps, and can't for the life of me figure out a way to do this easily. I wonder if anyone out there in "quilter world" has done this, and is there an easier way?

This ruler was pretty expensive and since I've already used it, I can't return it. I want to cut out a bunch of circles about 6-7 inches diameter for a quilt, and using this method is incredibly laborious.

Thanks to everyone for all your good ideas.

I just made a template and cut the circles with scissors. I drew around the template and did 4 at a time. Not very exciting I know but it was busy watching a movie work and they came out fine.

Try it with a piece of paper first. Fold the paper in half and align the bottom of the template with the folded edge. Then draw the line of your circle with a pencil. Cut the circle half and open it up to make sure that your circle is really round (I know that sounds silly, but if the alignment is off, you get an egg). Then repeat with fabric and a small rotary cutter. I find that I must pay close attention to the way I hold the cutter. It is easy to get off onto the next line. U R not alone in this.

I use old CDs as templates -- there are two readily available sizes and we have a stash of old or free CDs around the house. Then I use one of those mini rotary cutters to cut around the CD, slowly and carefully. Works well, provided the size is what you want.

Since I use it for applique, I trace onto Wonder Under then adhere and cut out along lines. Works great for this.

I am not familiar with the "ruler" you purchased, but wouldn't it be easier to fold the fabric in half twice, then cut a quarter-circle? If you are using the rotary cutter anyway, it would easily handle four layers, and you would only be cutting half the arc that you would have to cut using a semicircle... Just a thought.
