Why your last? Cost? Connecting threads sells some nice fabric collections priced well especially when on sale. I like them b/c it is easier than trying to pull coordinating fabrics so I do use them sometimes. Have fun with it.

Have never bought a collection yet, but if you do, how much of each design do you buy?

    yes, i have many time.

just bought the egyptian collection to make a bargello quilt. Just about choked at the price when the total came up. Fabric prices are going off the wall just like everything else.

very rarely do i buy an entire collection but i do buy a few pieces from a collection - maybe about 4 different designs tops.

collections today are so vast with 10-15 fabrics across 3 or 4 colorways that its impossible, for me any way, to afford buying 3 yards of every piece in the collection.

Many fabric manufacturers provide free project patterns for fabric collections so you can see what the completed project will look like before you buy and also know exactly how much of each design you'll need. It also saves the expense of buying a pattern. The only disadvantage I've found is that once the popular designs in the collection start running out, you may not be able to get any more. So buy a little extra for an oops block or matching accessory.

Sometimes in prints, it is easier to buy from a collection than to run to several shops and on-line trying to match up pieces.

I usually buy 4-5 1 yard pieces and one larger piece for the border or back. I like to use collections
