Default Do you remember your 1st quilt?

My 1st quilt was a sampler I enjoyed until the quilt police said I was using the wrong fabric (not calico). Being a newbie I thought I had done something wrong so I didn't quilt for many years. Then someone thought the quilt was great and that the "quilt police" were wrong.

I remember my first very fondly.. back in the 70's. It was also a sampler. Loved the colors, yellow, green, orange. I didn't finish it then. I let my aunt keep it while I was moving a lot. Somehow, it disappeared I still have the book and home made templates from plastic milk cartons.

Mine was a sampler too. I took a class at a local school and the teacher showed us various techniques. I'm really glad I took that class. The funny thing is my friend asked me to go with her and as it turns out that was her last quilt. I got addicted!

I started three at about the same time. Yo-yo, which took seven years to finish and was my little sisters wedding quilt.

A kit cross stitch one, was nearly finished quilted when I realized there was a bubble on the back. I was so disappointed I rolled it u and put it away. In 1976 Quilter's Newsletter had a traveling motorhome and visited shops, I talked to Bonnie Leman about it and she said to get it out, and hold a steam iron over it, see if the steam would settle it down. Of course when I got it out it wasn't anything, I'd just blown it up in my mind Still going strong, on it's 3rd binding. (4 stitches to the inch in pink...)

The one that didn't get finished? A double wedding ring (pencil/template/scissors of course) with Satin cornerstones and centers. Orange and cream. Working with satin is like trying to put socks on an octopus. It never got beyone about 8 blocks, but I've used it in a regional seminar on first quilts and we can over come

I can't recall my first quilting attempt since I was always fascinated with quilting. Watching my older sister and her skills was something that bring fond memories. I made a number of quilt blankets over the early years but they looked nothing like what I thought my personal vision of a quilt was. Then I caught an episode of "quilt in a day" on PBS and that was all it too. My stash was born and I self taught from then on out. Back before the internet I joined a quilting group on Usnet and another one on Fidonet. It was on fidonet that I got into my first block swap. I learned a whole lot from that small group of women (there were no men in this group) and they were very tolerant and the best teachers of all. I still have the first patchwork quilt I ever made.I thought about 'reworking' it a number of times and changed my mind as a way to tell myself just how far I have come. I actually only quilted around the 12" block. I use a poly blend on the sashing, no blocking and a frayed piece of fabric on the back figuring no one would see the back anyway. I believe the block is called Dutchman's Puzzle. The last quilt I made is currently on my quilt frame it is a quilt that I am making with a group of quilters here. It is a scrappy double Irish Chain. That pic with have to wait until it is finished.

I remember my first quilt. It was a wall hanging I did of a trip around the world with fabrics that were not all cotton. I still have it. It is hanging in my basement. Now that my skills have improved. I think I need to make another one with better fabrics.

My first quilt was one that I never made. My cousin and I planned to take a class and both make the same quilt. Her husband gave her the green light and mine nixed the project. So it was with tears in my eyes that I visited her house to see her completed quilt.

Fortunately, the blob of protoplasm ran off with an elderly widowed grandmother eleven years older than he was. He thought she had money and she thought he had money and he divorced me and married her immediately. Neither one had a dime. She had blown through her money in the 6 years she had been widowed and without me and my job, mine never had a chance. They were divorced 6 months later.

I'm still laughing at the situation. I have a home, apartments and a business all paid for and he has declared bankruptcy three times.

The quilt was to be a sampler in browns. Now, every time I make my signature sampler and I often do it in browns, golds and beige, I chuckle to myself.

My first was a double irish chain lap quilt for my grandmother. I brought it back home after she passed away so my aunt wouldn't destroy it like she did one my sis made for our grandmother. So I still have mine!
