I generally hand quilt and I use it most of the time. It shows my stitches and I like that. With my machine quilting I don't like the look as much. It is easier to quilt through and in the past almost all quilts had muslin backs or scraps. I buy it by the bolt. I know lots of people make what I would consider two fronts and quilt them, they are gorgeous but I don't have the funds to do that and I have lots of people to quilt for so I don't do that either. I make lots of bed quilts and when they are on the bed no one see the back anyway.

I sure do! The price of 120" muslin is much more economical than any other fabric, and if you don't get the cheap stuff, it's pretty, too.

Phyl, you're absolutely correct. In fact, on the patch I put on the back of both of my daughters quilts, in addition to name, date, etc. I put, "There's love in every stitch"

Plain muslin backing is best to use if you are hand quilting. It shows the texture of the quilting to best advantage. Use the best grade muslin. It is best to use a patterned backing if you machine quilt.
    Happy quilting

Whenever I use muslin, I wash it first because alot of it shrinks!

I usually use a printed fabric for backing but i may start using muslin on the backs if it's for charity.
I feel that if someone is paying me for a quilt that they probably want a printed back also.
BUT if you buy quilts from a store I don't think any of them come with printed back fabric.
I made my daughter & SIL a quilt for their wedding gift and used a cream colored sheet for the back and it really looked nice instead of a print of some sort....I have a brown print batik on my bed quilt and now I wish it was a plain muslin.

I don't. I want color on the back of my quilts. I use a matching print or a complimentary print for the backing. I do use the extra wide backing if I can find the right color. That is a little cheaper and still looks nice.
