Hello-- has anyone doubled up the poly-fill extra loft batting to make a "puffy" quilt? I will be tying this quilt bc that is the look I want on this quilt. On the JoAnn's site, the extra loft batting says that it can be doubled for a fluffier comforter look and feel. If I did this, and it was actually 3/8 inch loft it would be about 3/4 inch puffiness. There is also a high loft that is 1/2 loft and almost double the oz per sq yd. The quilt is big--a King size so it will be heavy no matter what and that is fine.

If you are using a LA ask if it can be quilted that puffy. I'd make a sample square to see how it would look first.

I typically like a puffier batting with less quilting than is currently popular. A lot depends on how it will be finished.

I have certainly doubled thinner batts, but would hesitate doing thicker ones before I did some tests. Like, if I knew I was just going to tack down the corners of the blocks maybe using buttons, I'd go ahead and make it as thick as you want. If you and your machine can handle it, go for it! But again, before I was committed to the double batting I'd do some tests using the quilting design I want. You want to end up with puffy, not a mattress pad!

Perhaps you should make a pieced duvet cover rather then tieing if you want a super puffy look. I would think trying to tie a king size with double batt would be a pain.

I know my son loves the comforter look. I have always wondered if it is because that's what was popular when he was growing up. I think Tartan has the right idea. A duvet cover with a thin bat like Thermore. Then a purchased comforter. I have made puffy quilts with the highest loft I can find (for my son). The high loft makes them shift terribly. Since you are tying your quilt, it might shift too much in the wash. Just a guess.

One of my husbands favorite quilts that I made just for him is double batted with a poly high loft bat. He loves it and it is the warmest quilt he has and he has loved it now for 30 years. He is always asking me to make him another one. It was difficult to quilt on my DSM and I did not quilt it closely. I actually put a couple appliques on it that he is in love with. IT has lasted a very long time with continuous use. One thing it is harder to keep the double bat from shifting. You might want to try Elmer's Washable School glue to baste the bat together and then baste the rest of the quilt. I love EWSG for basting a whole quilt.

Did you know that Joanna has this? It says Hi Loft COMFORTER . It’s the highest I have found. I used it in a Queen and a King. I quilted it but was hard on my shoulder because it does make a really heavy quilt. The blue is Queen, the Colorful Mosaic is King. They do puff.
