Sounds like we all need to be aware that the standards are changing even in the fabric industry. So disheartening.

My Joann's told me in either January or February that they were changing suppliers for their fat quarters. I have noticed the difference too. And while they may be "correct" as advertised, it is yet one more inconsistency in a world where we increasingly ignore the tried-and-true standards. We can't count on anything when we try to plan now.

So I always buy two and only if they are half-price that day. But I'm not liking the quality of the cotton either, so I'm going away from FQs entirely.

Yes, have seen the fat 8ths and smaller cuts. Even have seen books geared towards these smaller cuts.

if you're making a sampler quilt ... especially one with tiny blocks like a Dear Jane ... fat eights can make more sense than fat quarters or traditional cuts off the bolt.

"fat" cuts are only half as wide as their regular counterparts, but they are also twice as high. that will often result in having more usable space from which to cut.

even though you're paying more than the per-yard price for a fat cut, you're still buying less of the fabric. if you think you might want to use that fabric again, then a fat cut makes no sense. but, if you know you'll only want that little bit and no more you'll spend far less overall for that particular quilt.

i have such an aversion to buying less than a yard, it took me a while to figure that out.

you know what they say ... fact is stranger than fiction.

Yeah, be careful girls---I bought a solid black fat quarter from JoAnns because I only needed a small amount---the fabric was so thin you could see through it. I have never bought fabric that bad in a fat quarter there before. All their solids on the bolt are great. I wrote them, but have not heard a single word.
