Default Fleece backing for baby quilt/blanket

This is the first time I have used fleece as a backing for baby quilt/blanket. The top is pieced cotton and I used fleece for a backing (no batting). I sewed around the perimeter, wrong sides together, then flipped it right side out. Sewed up the gap.

Here's the question. Do I need to tack the backing and the top together or can I just leave it? Should I top stitch around the perimeter? The quilt is about 38" x 46".

    Any advice would be appreciated.

I would do both. My guess is that it will turn to mush when laundered if you don't. Baby stuff gets laundered often.

I would do some stitching to prevent the blanket from getting all twisted in the washer/dryer.

I would do some large stippling over the blanket/quilt. It would be sort of like my summer quilt that I finished this year. It had no backing but I did quilt it just as if it did. You don't want that separation between the front & back when it is washed. It was easy to quilt even though it didn't have batting.

Why use fleece? Yes it's cute and cuddly but likely it's polyester. Do you know what happens to polyester in a fire? It melts and causes 3rd-degree burns. I'd personally never use any polyester in a baby quilt or even a toddler's. If you intend to gift this item I'd do some quilting on it or it's going to never hold together right.

I have done both to make sure it stays together. This will be perfect for snuggling with mom & dad plus tummy time.

Cotton and polyester shrink at different rates. Was the cotton top pieced with pre-washed fabrics? I would be on the safe side and tack or quilt the layers together so the top doesn't shrink smaller than the back and stitch around the perimeter.

You do need some stitching over the whole quilt to hold the layers together. You could also tie it. I have found that the little ones like to play with the ties which is good for their development.

Thanks for all the info! I hadn't considered the fire risk. I am going to do some tacking at the corners just to keep the front and back together and then top stitch around the edges. I don't think I will use this in another baby quilt.

Thanks again for all the good input! Very much appreciated!
