I prewash all my fabrics, so I don't, but if it got dirty, or I felt the need to, then I would. I think it's a personal choice type thing, so I would say, do as you feel necessary...

I wash any quilts I'm going to give away mainly because I have a dog and two cats who share the house with me. As soon as they come out of the dryer they go into a pillowcase or plastic bag ready for mailing or gifting.

Yes, I do because I usually have sprayed starch on it and I want to get it out before it goes to new home.

I always wash my quilts that I give away. Mainly because I like the look and I always hope it hides any thing I may have messed up on! lol :lol:

Looks like I'm in the minority today. When I gift a quilt I have a cute little single sheet printout that I include ("I Will Last Longer if Properly Treated"). Among other things, I mention that the quilt has not been laundered and if they prefer a more vintage look, they should gently wash the quilt in lukewarm water and tumble dry on a low setting. I began doing this years ago when a quilting friend was accused to charging someone for a new quilt when it was clearly used (washed) - go figure.

I wash most of the time in case someone has an allery to the fabric chemicals. Of course there have been a few exceptions :-)

I guess the reason I do, is I want to be the one to see how the quilt looks after washing, if it needs some unseen repair from before the washing - or????? But, then that is me.... I always use cold water, oxyclean, and line dry - so it should not fade, but also add the color grabbing sheets to the wash... make sure. and I peak at the water so make sure it is not fading; if so, I also include the sheets with the "gift" so they know they too can keep it looking new.

I have noted some charities request you to prewash fabrics and then to again wash the completed quilt to avoid any problems or allergies to fabric finishes. With this in mind I would determine who is receiving the quilt and the type of quilt (and if there are pets that have "helped"). If it is for a child, yes. If it is an heirloom type for an adult, maybe not.
