    Default Hand quilting

I need some advice from the pros. I am making a red and white quilt with red backing and I would like to try hand quilting so what color thread should I use?
    Thank You for your advice

If you have a two color quilt it really does not matter if you use red or white if you are quilting on both the white and the red. But if this is the first time to hand quilt and you do not want to bring attention to the quilting and you can do the quilting in just one color use the color to match the color you are quilting in.

I agree that there is nothing wrong with quilting with 2 colors.

I would go with red as white will leap out at you when the quilt is reversed ----- it won't be as dramatic on the front side because red is already there ............ Good luck and please post picture when your done.

what kind of thread do you use when hand quilting and do you double the strands or use single strand in the needle?

I agree with Sewwhat85 either one would work. I use hand quilting thread, it's very strong and I've never had any breakage even after 20+ years. I hope you enjoy the process

lildinks2013, when I hand quilt I use 40wt./3ply thread and it is a single strand.

You want to use specifically labeled hand quilting thread. Single thread in the needle. I also use 'quilting heaven' which is a conditioner. Helps keep thread from tangling and also helps it glide through the fabric/batting easier.

I usually use multiple colors of thread when hand quilting. In fact, the quilt I am working on now, I am using a dark blue in the dark blue fabric and a red in the light blue background novelty print. Except in the larger plain blocks (of same fabrics) and I am using red in all of the fabrics. The backing has all of the colors of the top in a single fabric. The quilting will likely not show so much on the back but that's ok.
