Default Hand sewing needles. What's the purpose of "Betweens" ?

I have hand sewing needles packages by the dozens (mine, Mom's, Grandma's) and some packages are called "Betweens". I looked on the Internet and results didn't answer my question. What is their purpose ?

"Betweens" are needles used for hand quilting. They are short, thin and strong to enable the hand quilter to load several stitches on the needle before pulling the thread between the layers.

Geri, you might want to get the "Period" on your keyboard looked at. It appears to be sticking.

There are many types of needles varying in thickness and in length.

Not necessarily short. I have a package of betweens that are longer then the average needle, but definitely thin and strong.

Ok. They can live with the other hand quilting needles, which I don't use. I did help hand quilt once in my life.

I use the larger sizes of betweens by Richard Hemmings for big stitch hand quilting.
