I've learned to answer the question of "do you sew?" with "I only sew quilts." If I'm asked if I make quilts I say "Yes but I only make quilts for myself."

I get this a lot too... and I hate doing alterations. Regardless, I ended up at the high school with my serger hemming 20+ choir dresses. I'm willing to do it for the kids at school but am trying to learn to say no to others...

    Love Candance's response

    .
My hubby's aunt did alterations, including replacing zippers in jeans. So he assumes I ought to enjoy doing that.

I'd rather birth a horse that replace a zipper in jeans.

If you wanted some extra money for quilt stuff you could earn it real fast doing even basic alterations or repairs. Ask anyone who has been a bridesmaid lately how much it cost them to have the dress hemmed, altered or fitted.

My charge for replacing a zipper in jeans would be about a thousand dollars.

Hemming I'd do for a price.

I always tell people that my good sewing machine only does quilting which can be quite complicated What they don't realise is that I only to use the straight stitch most of the time.

That was quick thinking. Kind of did that this past Sat. Waited a customer that was handed over to me. They were shopping for a maid of honnor dress. Then they needed someone to make it, I said that I lived in a town which was 35 miles away, that they didn't want. I was glad because the dress is going to be ov camoflage knit with bright orange.
Yea good thinking on your part.

I would have said, "Sure, $20 a pair"... He would have ran away screaming or paid it and you'd have some quilting money. Pants hems are a breeze.
