I sandwiched, the other alternative is to use a metallic ironing board cover and leave the silver side exposed inside the cover

I made a couple for gifts and used this. For me it was easier to manipulate. IF you already have the insulbrite then I wouldn't bother but you can purchase the ironing board cover already quilted. A coupon at JoAnns helps with the cost.

I don't think it is meant to be left uncovered. I could see it breaking apart with continued use right on the resistant side.

Insulbrite has tiny threads that could get caught. You can sandwich or use the silver iron board covering or use the silver quilted fabric. All these options would allow for easier sliding in and out of the curling iron.

I would not leave insulbright uncovered. I think it is meant to be used like a batting with fabric on both sides of it.

I would be afraid that a very hot curling iron repeatedly rubbing against the fibers and metal might melt them and/or wear them out quickly.
    Good luck.

Many years ago we made them by folding over a quilted place mat and stitching 2 sides closed. That was it. i know for a fact one is still in use. ☺️

When I made mine, I used pot holders folded in half and the "silver ironing board cover" on the inside.
