Smile Horse Quilt

Hi everyone, its been awhile..I have a quilt question ( of course) I want to hand embroider horses on muslin for a quilt for my 6 yr old granddaughter. However, I really don't know what squares to use to go with this. Unfortunaliy I have already bought the muslin so I really need to use that, I thought of gingham but it didn't look good, any one ever done something like this. PLEASE PLEASE I need some ideas.
Thank You, sandy

I haven't done one, but how about bandanna fabric?

If her favorite color is purple, then embroider the horses in purples and use purple fabrics to finish it out. Just make it match to her taste. Think FUN and what's it like to be 6!!! They usually don't want actual, they want their favorites.

I made a baby quilt with a large hand- appliqued horse on it in one corner. I pieced the background in soft muted florals and put the dark brown flannel horse applique on top, with dark brown gingham border and backing. Told him it was a horse in a field of flowers, and he loved it.

Muslin goes with everything, so I don't understand why it didn't look good with the gingham.

I think the embroidered blocks might be nice set with green and muslin Irish Chain blocks. Maybe use the embroidered blocks as the focal fabric center square for a Warn Wishes quilt?

There's a few different setting ideas on google for embroidered horse quilts, maybe something there might appeal to you? https://www.google.ca/search?q=embro...53%3B300%3B244

I am thinking of the Kentucky derby winners covered with roses after a race. Why not use an all over rose print? Failing that I would use a plaid.

This little one I made I used a 9 patch as the alternate block, just to give you another idea.
