No 1 would be my choice. At 89 years of age I think the less busy one would be best.

I vote #2, I think since your fabrics are so similar in value, you can see their differences in #2.

I like them both but tend to lean towards 2. But remember it is your choice. Either way will look beautiful.

Quote: I'm making a quilt for my 89yr old Father-in-law and (besides making a really bad choice on the fabric - not enough contrast with the colour etc), which layout is most pleasing? I think #1 is kind of plain and #2 is too busy. Right now they are cut in 8 1/2" blocks . Any help would be greatly appreciated (I hope the photo's upload OK)
I love your fabric choice, especially considering for whom you are making this quilt! My guess is your father-in-law, after 89 years of living, will prefer the whisper of this beautiful quilt instead of the shout of a brighter one! As for the layout, I like both very much. Is your father-in-law more zigzaggy or windmilly? That might help you choose! It will be a lovely gift under which he will find much pleasure in reading, thinking, remembering!

I like # 2... The Zig zag of the Rail Fence pattern kinda distracting to an older person ,
I used to work in a Nursing Home and that pattern is confusing to ones with Dementia ...
I like the pattern on #2... But either are made with Love..

I really like the first one. And remember - it's for a guy - they usually want something low key.

I love both also, but maybe the best decision would be choose the one with the best quilting design to enhance the quilt with, that you have in mind. In other words both quilt tops are great, what do you have in mind to quilt on the tops and which would look best when finished?
