Default Ideas for quilting Illusion quilt...not FMQ

I need ideas to quilt the Illusion Quilt. Another name for it is Shadowbox.
The inspiration came from the pic in the link below (thanks Sandra!) .

I want to do something other than FMQ.
    Would appreciate input from members.
    Thank you.

I recently saw a quilt that had 2-3 rows of straight line stitching about 1/4" apart just inside the edges of the blocks. It crossed over at the edges, not inside each other like echo. It had a really nice look to it. I wish I saved a picture of it.

I would quilt the boxes with a cross hatch, or other straight line pattern. Then I would quilt the background and shadow with a stipple design. This will preserve the illusion that the boxes are separate things floating above the background, leaving a shadow.

I would first stitch in the ditch then the width of the shadow on the same side, quilt a shadow in the focus fabric just to make sure everything stayed in place. I prefer straight stitching.

If you can get your hands on Angela Walter's Shapes book, there are lots of great suggestions there for more geometric quilting, especially in quilts with more "negative" space.

I like this suggestion, it would definitely bring out the quilt

When I have trouble figuring out how I want to quilt any particular project I sketch it out on grid paper and play with different designs. Sometimes I will put a piece of clear vinyl on top of the quilt and mark it with erasable markers to see a larger area and how it might look. You may want to try this and play with different quilting ideas.
