    I have the manual and the same machine. I always move my needle when starting, never noticed this feature.

    What I do on my janome is something I already sewn with the scant 1/4" seam just line up the needle it's that easy

    Regardless of the amount of fabric in the right of the needle it is important to measure a
    sample strip set to see if the finished piece in the center is the correct size. There are some
    videos and tutorials that show this.
