I think if you miter the strips, your quilt will be smaller, because you lose 1 3/4" at each seam joined that way. Maybe someone with more experience will know better....these were only the 3rd and 4th real quilts I've ever done!

These are really great quilts. I have made several of these, never thinking to cut the strips into other lengths to vary the look. I love what you have done. I just cut some strips for a Christmas strippy quilt and I am going to do as you have suggested and cut again in thirds, halfs, etc. This is wonderful new way to make one of these fun quilts. It's a new way to me anyway. This will be so much fun to experiment with. Thank you for showing your great quilts.

Watched a video the other day of a quilter taking her scraps that were long enough and she cut them 2-1/2" wide and then stitched them together until she had enough to make a small quilt. Her colors were mostly in the lavendar to purple range. She had long strips and shorter strips she stitched together.

For Jannm:The scrappier one was 1 Moda jelly roll containing 40 strips. The other one- that jelly only had 20 strips, so I used 2 rolls. The size varies some because for instance the strips in jelly rolls are not the same from all manufacters. The scrappier one without borders is approximately 52 1/2 x 65 3/4"; the other one is about 5" smaller. These are really easy...planning to do more!

Just joined this board. I was given the 1600 Jelly Roll idea by a terrific woman who ran a quilt shop in Mountain View AR. I needed something quicker to make for my youngest granddaughter (will be 2 in Dec 2012). I've been reading threads and instructions about this quilt all over. I think the idea of cutting the strips shorter is great. I've also decided to make a bunch of 2 1/2 " paper pieced hearts to add into this one. I don't know how often to sew them in so that they won't all bunch up, but I'll probably just take a guess as I don't want to do the math!!!
