Default Marking a quilting design that is clear and won't ruin the quilt

After using quilter chalk on a whole cloth quilt, I was unable to remove the marks!! Used every stain remover known to humanity and the marks still wouldn't come out. Ended up filling my bathtub with water, adding a quart of bleach and bleached the entire quilt. Would you believe those marks were still visible. Needless to say, the brilliance of the colors were considerably muted. Thank goodness my daughter loves me and loves the quilt regardless.............Now..............move ahead another few months and I made a quilt from pieces a lady gave me from a quilt her son started in the 9th grade. She wanted to give it to him as a finished quilt for Christmas. Was going to mark the dark maroon blocks with a pencil but the material was too dark and couldn't use a light box. Wasn't about to attempt any chalk. Did some research and came up with "Solvy" a water soluble stabilizer for embroidering on fleece and toweling. I traced the designs on to the Solvy and pasted them to each block with water soluble glue and proceeded to quilt. Again filled my bathtub to soak off the solvy blocks and "voila" they did dissolve fully and completely. The quilt turned out beautiful and the lady actually cried when she saw the finished quilt. Yes, solvy is the way to go when other methods don't work!! Just wanted to share this with others who maybe have had a similar problem in transferring FMQ designs to tops.

What a great solution to the marking issue!! I'm just learning how to do the quilting and find that I forget to mark the top until after it is layered -- your method solves that problem -- much easier to draw on the solvy and not fight the fabric or a large quilt!

Solvy works great! Another option is this:

I've used it on several different fabrics and it comes right off. I think there is a YouTube video demo linked on the site. I just love it - it's my new favorite way to mark quilts.

Interesting idea. I have marked a ton of quilts using Clover chalk slim liners but I have learned to stay away from ANY COLOR chalk. Still have never gotten the blue Clover chalk off a quilt I made. They do in their instruction inform us to test the fabric first.

I have used Golden Thread paper for hard to mark fabric. Nice to know Solvy works too in case I ever need it.

Golden Threads paper is much more affordable than buying the Solvy.
