Hey all! I went to this little quilt shop that has been giving me some quilting advice. However, when I went to pick out fabric for my first quilt, I couldn't believe it! $10/yard?!?!?

So - calling all MN quilters... where do you find the best deals on fabric?

I'm not in MN.. I'm in TN.. but... most LQS that's an average price for fabrics.. I've taken to shopping on line for great service and much better prices. I've even gone in to the LQS.. found a fabric I like then go on line to find it cheaper..lol.. I know that's cheating.. but it's OK..lol. Here are a couple of excellent, widely used sites in case you're interested.. http://www.whittlesfabrics.com/ ; and http://www.thousandsofbolts.com/

There is S.R. Harris north of Minneapolis. Here is their website:
http://www.srharrisfabric.com
This is a fabric warehouse where you cut your own fabric. They have big tables and yardsticks; you label each fabrc with marked price and yardage cut. (For more than 5 yards or so, you have to ask an employee to measure and cut for you.) All fabrics are 50% off the marked price and they regularly run specials on different fabris; check their website or the newspaper for their specials. Most of their batiks are Timeless Treasures, and I think that runs $7 a yard; however, they have tons of other cotton fabrics for less. (p.s. I just checked the coupon area of their website and batiks are on sale for $4.99/yd through 2/28!)

Another option is Mill Ends Fabric. They have several locations throughout the area, and some are much better than others. They used to have two I frequented that were fabulous, but one closed and the other moved; I don't know which are the good ones nowadays. Be sure to try out all their locations before crossing them off your list. Here is the website:

I like the Millends Textiles in Burnsville. I have gone to a couple of the others ; but they don't seem as organized. I have been to the S. R. Harris store. they are stacked floor to ceiling .with the bolts of fabric laying down , which makes it hard to see what the print is. Elaine

Hi Minnesota lady.... I too am from Minnesota, Welcome to the quilting board.
I hardly ever by my fabric from a LQS.
Maybe because there is not one close enough for me to just run in and run out when I need something.
try this place on line, http://www.connectingthreads.com
I found very good quality quilting fabric for $2.96 a yard
and because the price was so unbeileivable, I purchased $50.00 worth and my shipping was free. and they pack it all so nicely for you too. I have a few on line places I like. and I always wait until they have the free shipping offer. Hope this helps you some. Good luck and Happy quilting.

Keaghank-
I would definetely recommend the Mill End Textiles. You can find LQS quality fabric for half the price. There is one in Apple Valley too, as I believe you are on the south side. I've found them to be very well organized and set up very similar to a quilt shop (by color, style). I live just down the road from SR Harris and do not like it! It seems very disorganized and overwhelming, especially if you don't really know what you want. There are also several Walmarts in the twin cities who still have fabric and if you look, you can get some decent fabric there. I haven't ordered from Connecting Threads yet but hear good things about them.
