My Good News about a 401A Singer

I just got my Singer out of the shop and it runs great--less than $200 in repairs. Here is the story: My Mother bought this machine new in 1960. She sewed quite a bit and considered this a lifetime investment. I learned to sew on it. My daughter learned to sew on it. Somehow it got misplaced in all the drama when Mom got Alzheimers, nursing homes, etc. and I never thought I'd see it again. Then I got a phone call asking if I wanted it back (from a family member that was just using it for the cabinet)--you bet I did! It hasn't sewn for probably close to 20 yrs, just been sitting. Took it to a guy lives down the road and it runs like new. I am so proud of it. My next project: fixing my mil's 1919 Singer! I am on a roll!

I am so happy for you that your Mother's machine has made it back home to you! I inherited my Mom's 403A. Pretty much like your Mom, mine bought it in 1956 & used it forever & forever. I also used it while I was living at home going to school. A few years ago, upon my Mom's passing, it came home with me. It is the machine I use for all of my sewing. Solid workhorse, running as good as it did 30+ years ago!

Oh, how lovely! I learned to sew on my grandmother's 401 and it was the search for the same machine that started me collecting vintage machines. I bought the exact same cabinet and bench and I have filled all the drawers with vintage notions and accessories for it. Darning eggs, skirt markers, design disks - even a pair of Wiss pinking shears that came in the exact same box that my g-ma kept hers in, in between uses. :)
I love these beautiful machines and a seamstress is just about guaranteed to never outgrow it. It's just fabulous, isn't it?
