    Default Need help with my little experiment on threads.

    When I was getting ready to quilt my grandson's I spy quilt I wanted a colorful thread vs a solid color. Right next to my sewing desk is a cabinet with all my serger spools on top. I looked up and there was a cone of jewel tone swirl. So I said, hum, that's thin, right color, but too thin for quilting. So I told myself, load up a couple of bobbins with the swirl, then use the cone and put the two together and you'll have the right thickness. Well I did, I had to watch the bobbin on top cause sometimes it would wrap around the stick, the cone was left on the serger and extended to meet the bobbin thread. I used a 14 size needle and tested it out.

    My result> It worked fine, just one issue. When I stopped to turn the quilt to go about a 45degre or 90 degree angle I noticed a nest under the quilt. Not too noticable, but I kept thinking, why is it doing great when I straight sew, but it's nesting when I turn.

    Any thoughts? This was strickly a test, I've sense bought some swirls for machine quilting, however I would still appreciate any thoughts as to why it nested at turns.

    I can get a small bump (too many stitches in one spot) if I don't completely stop stitching before going in the next direction. I think it is because as you pause to move your hands, the machine takes a couple of more stitches while you foot is still on the pedal. May not be your problem though?

    Part of the problem may be because the bobbin thread is coming off the bobbin backwards. Try winding the existing bobbin onto another bobbin. The new one would have the thread coming off in the same direction as thread comes off the spool.

    I do think that Tartan's is the most probable cause of the problem.

    Tartan, I make sure the needle completely stops, but I will try it again. Thanks too prism99, I'll see if that helps too.

    Do you make the turn with the needle DOWN in the fabric?
