    Default Plain & Fancy BOM

I saw this lovely quilt that is a BOM. It is for this year. I am wondering if others have signed up. I have never done a BOM, but seriously considering it as the quilt is so pretty. For those who have done BOMS, what do you think of them?http://ivoryspring.wordpress.com/201...you-signed-up/

Hello Joan. This is a very pretty quilt. I have several UFOs that were blocks of the month from my LQS. I found it difficult to follow through with the quilts as in each one there was at least one fabric I really didn't like and didn't have a way to replace. If you don't mind having someone else make your fabric choices and are sure of the shop from which you are buying it (I've heard about a lot of kits and BOM that are very stingy with the amount of fabric they provide) then go for it. Just remember, everyone who does the BOM as sold will end up with the same quilt as yours, the only difference will be in workmanship. As you can tell, I'm not really in favor of them. Even so lots of people love them or they wouldn't be available. Good luck in making your decision. Joyce in DE

    Hi Joyce,
Thanks for your answer. I did think of the fact that there will be lots of quilts the same. For that reason and others , I am still on the fence. I really like the fabric, and would love to buy fat quarters, but I can't find anyone selling those.

basicly it is carpenter wheel blocks offset with ohio stars and pinwheels. Pretty but you don't need a class or anything. Although it is fun to work through something with others. What happens so often though is by the halfway mark most of the people are onto the next hot thing

Hi Kalama Quilts, It was the fabric along with the pattern that attracted me and I can't seem to find the fabric online.

I believe it is a brand new line coming out and may not yet be in most shops.

that one is very pretty! over the years I have done BOM's off & on- often people think it's way too expensive to go that route- but sometimes it is just worth it to pay extra for the convenience of someone else picking out the fabrics- and getting one block kit each month in the mail can be a fun way to make a quilt when you have other projects that take a lot of your time- you can set that one aside for a couple hours and make something fresh & new- then hang it on the wall & go back to your other project feeling fresh & inspired all over again. I have been known to buy a Bom, decide I don't like the fabrics, use my own and save the ones that came with the kit for something else- and other times I get the bom just because I love the fabrics.

I liked the idea of a block a month to make a quilt. Easy peasy. Problem came at the last month. I never did get all those blocks set together. Have one from so long ago, I don't know where they are in that room. Maybe I need to find them and add to my quest to finish UFOs.

I started a BOM at my LQS in 2009, enjoyed what classes I could attend but had medical problems and missed about half of the classes. Have everything here to finish up the quilt but have to many other projects in the works. Also have done several on line BOM's and the fabric is still in the packaging waiting for me to start them. It always seems like a good idea when I sign up and like the fabrics but just don't seem to get them done.

If you decide to do it you may really find you enjoy making your quilt that way. Would not worry about so many other people having a quilt made of the same fabric as I do. How many times have you looked at a magazine and bought the same fabric to make a quilt the is pictured?

Thank you all for your input. Still thinking about it. I was able to see the fabric close up at the Quilting Treasures site, but it was not as pretty as I thought. I think now I would rather buy some of the fabric than the BOM. I did learn that it is not in the stores yet-Maybe around the end of the month.
